Position Summary Supervises L&S Advising staff, oversees and manages the day-to-day operations of at least one functional area of the office. Serves as the primary point of contact to subordinates and provides guidance on issues related to academic progress, degree requirements, College policies, and processes. Leads initiatives and coordinates advising services.

Responsibilities
Supervision: Directly supervises advisor team providing comprehensive academic advising to students and service to department chairs, deans, and faculty.
Human resources: Develops job descriptions, selects subordinates, and assigns work; formulates performance standards aligned with the university coaching culture; conducts performance evaluations and recommends corrective action when necessary.
Policy guidance: Provides guidance to team members on interpreting complex academic policies; sets strategy and develops implementation plans.
Functional leadership: Manages the day-to-day operations of the designated functional area; improves processes and establishes workflow where needed.
Policy advisory: Advises team members on complex College policies and procedures; plans staff training and fosters teamwork.
Committee involvement: Serves on committees representing the functional area; participates in short-term and long-term planning; leads initiatives to coordinate advising services.
Student progress: Provides guidance on issues related to academic progress, degree requirements, College policies, and processes.
Projects: Develops tools and implements processes to help students progress toward degree completion and other academic goals; leads process analysis and supports improvement efforts.
Professional development & growth: Expands management and coaching skills and stays current with best practices in academic advising.
Qualifications Required
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Experience advising undergraduates in the College of Letters & Science or a similar setting; understanding of college policies and degree requirements.
Experience monitoring and assessing projects, processes, or services.
Ability to lead change and innovation; strong project management skills.
Problem identification, reasoning, persuasion, and leadership abilities.
Ability to learn University and departmental policies related to risk assessment and evaluating risks.
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred
Previous supervision or people management experience of career staff, at UC Berkeley or within the UC system.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Master's degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website. The budgeted annual salary range for this position is $98,000.00 – $110,000.00. This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
