Overview
The Chief Pharmacy Officer is an executive leadership role responsible for comprehensive strategic and operational pharmacy services leadership for Providence Health System. The CPO leads the transformation of pharmacy services across all divisions, delivering safe, effective, high-value, and accountable pharmaceutical services to support high-performance affordability, patient experience, and health outcomes. The role is a member of the Providence clinical senior executive leadership team with responsibility for developing and implementing a high-performance delivery system. Locations: Seattle, WA; Irvine, CA; or Portland, OR.
Key Responsibilities
Provide leadership oversight for financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and clinical and quality program oversight within Providence.
Lead a system-wide pharmacy governance structure to execute pharmacy strategies across business units and programs; guide regional and local implementations.
Lead a system-wide Pharmacy Governance Council with regional pharmacy leaders; set strategic directions aligned with the Providence clinical strategic plan.
Engage with Providence leadership councils to ensure pharmacy input is integrated across system initiatives.
Build strong relationships with medical staff and clinical leaders to align physician input with decision-making and address clinician needs.
Maintain high employee morale and develop a high-performing management team.
Lead the Providence Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, including charter compliance, meeting development, membership, and ongoing optimization of the formulary across the system.
Oversee Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee processes and clinical reviews as needed.
Oversee pharmacy technology investment; guide regional and system direction on technology decisions; utilize governance councils to justify and deploy technology initiatives.
Partner with Informatics, regional pharmacy directors, and key stakeholders to implement technology that supports triple-aim outcomes at the enterprise level.
Oversee the system-wide pharmaceutical supply chain to maximize efficiency and lower unit costs through formulary alignment, contracts, and leverage with suppliers.
Manage all contracts with pharmacy suppliers and manufacturers in coordination with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
Provide strategic guidance on medication management quality initiatives; promote a culture of patient and staff safety; strengthen medication safety programs; support policy advocacy for population health.
Maintain relationships with regional pharmacy leaders; participate in recruitment, evaluations, and development of pharmacy leaders; engage in long-range strategic planning with executives.
Develop partnerships with colleges of pharmacy and support residency and preceptor programs, including resident development across Providence St. Joseph facilities.
Lead workforce development to hire, retain, and develop a diverse, high-performing pharmacy workforce; implement career ladders for technicians, pharmacists, and leaders; build workforce pipelines for future needs.
Drive business effectiveness through collaboration with finance and executive leadership; support population health initiatives and governance for financial, operational, and labor planning.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess an RPh or PharmD degree with an unrestricted license and at least ten years of pharmacy management experience in hospital, health plan, or medical group settings, including staff accountability and a proven track record of results.
Experience in pharmaceutical contracting, P&T committee organization, and Pharmacy integration in clinical practice.
Training in negotiations and communications.
Familiarity with process improvement approaches in clinical settings.
Demonstrated leadership and communication skills within clinical settings.
