Under the instructor of record's supervision, the Online Teaching Assistant (TA) ensures successful delivery of asynchronous online courses. TAs provide instructional and technological support to online students in collaboration with the course instructor. This position does not include grading or assessment of learning. TAs may work remotely from within the United States.
This position is compensated at the Level B rate on the MIIS student wage scale: $17.00 - $17.50 per hour.
This position is open for Fall A. The expected available hours for this position are 5 per week.
CoreResponsibilities:
Before the course begins, communicate with the instructor to set expectations for the tasks to be performed. Duties might include responding to student discussion posts, providing clarity on assignment guidelines, giving feedback on draft assignments, and holding office hours.
Familiarize oneself with the course syllabus and academic technology that supports the course, especially the Canvas learning management system.
Respond to student questions and requests promptly, typically within 24 hours.
If requested by the instructor, be available for office hours by appointment to accommodate students located across time zones.
Report any trends or concerns that might arise to the instructor, while honoring student confidentiality and FERPA regulations.
Troubleshoot technical issues when they occur and contact the Office of Digital Learning and Inquiry (DLINQ) or Information Technology Services (ITS) as needed.
PositionPrerequisites:
2nd-year student in the residential MA Translation & Localization Management program, preferred.
Prior teaching experience or experience facilitating online learning events, such as meetings or professional development, preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with students of diverse backgrounds.
Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
Familiarity with academic technology and willingness to learn new systems and platforms.
Must be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion throughout the teaching assistantship.
Must not be a registered student in the course for which the teaching assistant is providing support.
TAs are not eligible to work remotely from outside the United States.
Student Employment Eligibility:
Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus. Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions. Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component . Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations. Hour Limitations:
All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
