Summary:
This role involves leveraging personal life experiences with mental health and substance use challenges to support clients effectively. The Peer Support Specialist is an integral part of a community-focused team, providing personalized services that encourage self-determination and decision-making. This position also offers valuable consultation to paramedic teams, peer organizations, families, and patients, fostering a respectful and inclusive environment where individual perspectives are honored and integrated into treatment and recovery efforts.
Education and Formal Training
A high school diploma or GED is required. Candidates must be able to obtain certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist within one year through the appropriate state mental health department.
Experience
At least one year of peer support or related experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with harm reduction principles and syringe exchange laws is preferred. Basic understanding of personal safety standards and techniques for home visits. Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings, and collaborate effectively within a team. Ability to maintain professional boundaries while addressing sensitive issues and working with diverse populations. Comfort with public speaking and delivering group presentations. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of EMS policies and procedures and ability to apply them correctly. Ability to interact tactfully with the public and other personnel. Valid driving skills with thorough knowledge of safe driving practices. Capability to learn and apply additional training to enhance EMS staff efficiency. Proficiency in EMS communication systems. Understanding of age-specific physiological, psychosocial, developmental, and spiritual patient needs.
Physical Requirements
Good hearing, speaking, and visual acuity are necessary for supervision. The role requires operating emergency vehicles and moving through various physical environments, sometimes confined. Ability to lift up to 150 pounds with assistance and assume awkward positions during emergencies is essential. Exposure to potentially infectious materials may occur.
Special Requirements
A driving record check is mandatory. Candidates must have at least three years of licensed driving experience within the region.
