In response to ongoing social unrest and the increasing marginalization of vulnerable populations, particularly immigrant communities, the Archdiocese of Washington is hiring a Coordinator of Justice and Peace Ministry. The Coordinator of Justice and Peace who will serve as a pastoral resource to support parishes in their outreach, advocacy, education and service initiatives. This role will report to the Secretary of Evangelization and Synod Renewal and will work with parishes in providing support and theological resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead the support of parish-based efforts throughout the archdiocese in the following areas:

Organization and Partnership

  • Equip pastors and parish leaders with resources, training, and accompaniment.
  • Encourage parish social concerns committees or justice ministries.
  • Promote parish-based immigration accompaniment programs and Know Your Rights workshops.
  • Learn from successful Parish based Justice and Peace Committees and use them as pilot models in other parishes to launch programs.
  • Collaborate with the clergy support group and assist them in organizing events
  • Offer workshops and retreats on Catholic Social Teaching for parish leaders.
  • Provide ongoing spiritual formation rooted in Scripture, Theology in Human Mobility, and the Church's tradition of advocacy.
Education, Training and Advocacy
  • Train Justice and Peace Ambassadors in each deanery
  • Coordinate diocesan advocacy on immigration, housing, racial equity and worker rights.
  • Support parish participation in advocacy days, letter-writing campaigns, etc.
  • Host a diocesan Justice and Peace assembly
  • Equip clergy and laity to speak confidently and compassionately on justice issues.
  • Conduct listening sessions with parish leaders across diverse communities
  • Begin a quarterly justice newsletter and resource hub
  • Review and publish best practices
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Candidate must be a practicing Catholic, have excellent knowledge of the faith, complete orthodoxy in word and witness of life.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing is essential along with excellent organizational and people skills.
  • Team player, committed to the vision of the Church
  • Reliable transportation required to visit Archdiocesan parish locations.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Catechesis, Religious Education or Theology required.
  • Experience in Catholic advocacy at the diocesan level.
  • Familiar with migration and immigration issues
  • Experience working with campaign-based issues
  • Legal experience a plus
  • Experience in public speaking on behalf of Catholic causes.
  • 3 years of experience in leadership at either the parish or diocesan level.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish; verbal and written skills required.
  • Skills with MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint required
Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers and filing cabinets.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Regular full-time employee (40 hours/week); evening and weekend hours may be required.
  • This is an in-office position; Hybrid schedule offered (4 days in the office and one day remote).
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Travel required including local travel to Archdiocese parishes and schools.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000 with outstanding benefits
