POSITION SUMMARY:
At National Life Group, we are unlocking the power of data and AI to transform our business and enhance customer experience. Our Data & Analytics team is leading this effort through innovation in machine learning, advanced analytics, and Generative AI.
As a Data Science Intern, you will contribute to projects within our AI Center of Excellence (AI CoE). You’ll gain hands-on experience applying computer science and data science techniques to real business challenges. Projects may range from supporting the development of predictive models to experimenting with Generative AI solutions (such as summarization, chatbots, and content generation).
This is a unique opportunity to explore both traditional data science methods and emerging AI technologies while working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the design and development of AI/ML models, including both traditional algorithms and Generative AI use cases. Assist with data analysis, feature engineering, and exploratory research to improve model performance. Help evaluate and test LLMs (Large Language Models) and other AI tools for business applications. Contribute to building datasets, pipelines, and experiments to support data-driven decision making. Participate in discussions on AI ethics, governance, and responsible use. Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into technical experiments. Document findings, build presentations, and share insights with team members. QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently pursuing a Batchelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python (experience with libraries like Pandas, Scikit-learn; exposure to PyTorch/TensorFlow, Hugging Face, or LangChain is a plus). Familiarity with SQL and data manipulation. Exposure to machine learning concepts (classification, regression, NLP, etc.); coursework or projects in Generative AI is a plus. Curiosity and eagerness to learn about both modern AI technologies and foundational statistical methods. Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 10-week paid internship (June – August) with formal orientation and onboarding. Networking opportunities with peers and leaders throughout the summer. Cross-departmental group project presented at a company-wide event. Coaching and learning sessions to build technical and professional skills. Access to mentors (including prior program participants).
The base compensation range represents the low and high end of the range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience. The range listed is just one component of our total compensation package for employees.
Other rewards may include an annual bonus, quarterly bonuses, commissions, and other long-term incentive compensation, depending on the position. National Life offers a competitive total rewards package which includes: a 401(k) retirement plan match; medical, dental, and vision insurance; a company funded wellness account for director and below employees; 10 paid holidays; a generous paid time off plan (22 days of combined time-off for non-exempt employees and exempt employees have discretion in managing their time, including scheduling time off in the normal course of business, but in no event will exempt employees receive less sick time than required by state or local law); 6 weeks of paid parental leave; and 6 weeks of paid family leave after a year of full-time employment.
