Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and other specimen collections while ensuring proper labeling, handling, and processing. This role supports laboratory operations through specimen management, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations to maintain accuracy and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities: Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) following established protocols. Explain the specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients. Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accuracy. Package specimens appropriately for transport while maintaining specimen integrity. Maintain specimen storage conditions, including temperature control. Document and record maintenance data and perform decontamination of equipment. Update patient information in laboratory systems accurately. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings. Respond to telephone inquiries and assist with laboratory results as needed.
Required Qualifications: Valid phlebotomy certification in the state of employment (where applicable). Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
