AGRICULTURAL TECHNICIAN I (SEASONAL)

Under the supervision of the Agricultural Program Supervisor I, the Agricultural Technician I is assigned to perform the average difficulty range of duties involved in the mass rearing of Mediterranean fruit flies.
Dispose of Larval diet that is no longer useful and place into a composter for removal from the facility daily. Thoroughly clean and sanitize the cabinets and trays that contain the spent diet. Collect larvae from collection pans filled with water. Wheel collection cabinets into position as needed. Clean Collection Room and cabinets periodically. Use a mechanical sifter to separate pupae from pupation media to facilitate further production processes. Place pupae onto maturation trays and into maturation racks where the pupae will develop internally. Clean sifting area, trays, and pupae boxes as needed.

Working Conditions
The duties of this position are conducted indoors approximately 90% of the time. The specific settings where the incumbent may be required to work vary from room to room. Within the facility, there are various environmentally controlled production rooms and ambient outdoor temperature washrooms and corridors. The production of flies produces a non-toxic, foul-smelling odor that permeates clothing and hair. The facility is located on the windward side of Oahu in a permanent dwelling leased by the state. The average daily maximum outside temperature is 82° F.
Incumbent must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of the work.

Department Information The Pest Detection/Emergency Projects Branch (PDEP) is responsible for the early detection and prompt eradication of serious exotic agricultural pests. The Branch accomplishes its mission by conducting a statewide trapping program, staffed by county and state inspectors, for exotic insect pests; by implementing special surveys for significant agricultural pests and plant diseases for which traps are not available; and by providing emergency eradication services using the best available technology. The primary purpose of the Hawaii Fruit Fly Rearing Facility (HFFRF) is to provide the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Preventative Release Program (PRP) with a continuous supply of high-quality, sterile Mediterranean fruit flies (Medflies). This is accomplished by operating and maintaining a state-of-the-art production facility. The facility has permanent staff of thirteen that is supplemented with temporary help staff to maintain desired production levels.
