About this Job Division : Within the Medical Services Department at ELMHS, Located in Jackson, LA

The Mission of ELMHS is to provide mental health evaluation, treatment, habilitation, and consultation for adults. Programs include inpatient interventions, jail-based evaluations, supervised group home and residential programs, forensic evaluation, care, custody, and aftercare; intermediate and long-term psychiatric care are coordinated with the total system of care in Louisiana.

ELMHS is looking for a motivated, detail-oriented individual to join the team in the Medical Services Department as a Phlebotomist!

Minimum Qualifications One year of experience or training in nursing, phlebotomy, or as a medical lab assistant, medical lab technician, or in medical research that included drawing blood from patients; OR

Certification or eligibility for certification as a Phlebotomist by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners; OR

Six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in a biological science or chemical science field, or nursing.

In this role, you will: perform a variety of laboratory services for psychiatric patients who may be hostile and dangerous, increasing the risk of injury and/or exposure to blood borne pathogens. Collect blood specimens on those difficult-to-draw patients such as those with movement disorders and uncooperative patients requiring considerable explanation, discussion, and persuasion. Explain sterile venipuncture technique to patients. Prepare and perform sterile venipuncture in keeping with standard protocol on patients to obtain blood for requested analysis. After performing venipunctures, observes patients for possible reactions, and reports observations to a physician or other professional medical personnel. Records venipunctures. Prepare Laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, and sputum for diagnostic evaluation. Perform rapid chemical tests and analyses of body fluids and other material related to clinical medicine. Confer with the nurses and physicians on proper test orders and procedures. Compiles and maintains all records necessary for monthly reports to Quality Management, Infection Control, and the Medical Director. Serves as a resource for nurses and physicians related to Laboratory Services. Ensures that unit supplies for the Laboratory are ordered and maintained, and that all reagents are date compliant. Ensures Laboratory compliance with Infection Control Standards by maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Position-Specific Details: Appointment Type:
