NSC Staffing is seeking a

Pumper Improver

to support ship repair and modernization projects in Jacksonville, FL. This role involves preparing spaces for Marine Chemist certifications, transferring liquids, and assisting with tank operations aboard U.S. Naval vessels, Military Sealift Command ships, and commercial vessels. Candidates must be safety-focused, reliable, and experienced in maritime environments.

Position Overview: As a Pumper Improver, you will assist in setting up and performing pumping operations, tank opening and closing, ventilation, power washing, and handling hazardous materials. You will work under the supervision of a journeyman while complying with OSHA, NAVSEA, and shipyard safety standards. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist with the setup of pumping operations and related equipment. Support opening and blanking of tanks, including associated paperwork. Operate power washing equipment and assist with vacuum truck operations. Help set up positive and negative ventilation systems. Assist with oil spill response, hydrostatic testing, and air service operations. Follow Lockout/Tagout protocols and support Work Authorization Forms (WAFs). Maintain compliance with NAVSEA Standard Items (009-88, 009-25) and other regulatory standards. Provide accurate paperwork, reports, and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required. Keep work areas clean, safe, and properly organized at all times. Adhere to company non-discrimination and anti-harassment policies.

Qualifications & Experience:

4+ years of related experience, including 2+ years in a maritime environment. Documented Competent Person training required. Ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, and ship repair terminology. Strong understanding of ship compartment nomenclature and repair practices. Physically and medically capable of wearing OSHA-required PPE (hard hat, respirator, safety harness, flotation gear, etc.). Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of fractions/decimals). Familiarity with both U.S. customary and metric systems. Must be able to prepare spaces for gas-free certification. DBIDS required for access to Navy facilities.

Work Environment:

Shipyard setting with exposure to confined spaces, elevated platforms, heavy machinery, and loud noise. Work may take place outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, humidity). Must be able to work in tight spaces, climb ladders/scaffolding, and safely handle hazardous materials. PPE is mandatory at all times (hard hat, respirator, gloves, safety harness, etc.). Overtime and shift work may be required.

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift/push/pull 50-100 lbs occasionally, and up to 20 lbs frequently. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods. Comfortable working at heights above 12 feet, in confined spaces, and maneuvering through small openings. Must maintain good balance and coordination while using tools and equipment.
