Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF FUNCTION: This position is responsible for general accounting duties including recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and reporting financial information. The General Ledger Accountant reports directly to the Assistant Comptroller.

Job Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties:
  • Adhere to all College policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to State and Federal laws and regulation.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with college personnel, students and the community.
  • Attend to details and perform at high rate of accuracy.
  • Upgrade skills level and performance through professional development.
  • Insure the integrity of financial control procedures and proper accounting measures.


Specific Duties:
  1. Work with various departments to ensure proper posting of deposits and expense including the review of the cashier sessions of the Campus Business offices.
  2. Process bank transactions including stop payments, direct deposit reversals, and wire transfers.
  3. Review and reconcile the general ledger accounts monthly as assigned.
  4. Verify the accuracy of Accounts Payable checks prior to release by the college.
  5. Manage and reconcile student travel and out of state travel.
  6. Assist with the year-end close of the college's fiscal year.
  7. Assist with the preparation of the annual MS Budget Request as needed.
  8. Submittal of reports to the College's external Auditor.
  9. Assist with the preparation of the semiannual and annual financial statements.
  10. Maintain documentation on existing account processes and procedures and propose improvements as deemed necessary.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Comptroller.


Mandatory Qualifications

(M1) Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or other business related degree.
(M2) Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to work in networked environment.
(M3) Detailed oriented.
(M4) Excellent organizational skills.
(M5) Effective written and interpersonal communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

(D1) Masters degree in accounting or business.
(D2) Two years of accounting experience.
(D3) Experience working at a community college or university.
(D4) Experience working with an enterprise resource planning system (ERP).
(D5) Experience with the State of MS accounting and procurement system.
