Description: The Manager of Laboratory Operations managers the SLC Molecular Biology Laboratory Support team and general operations related to the shared laboratory spaces. Works with senior leadership and appropriate stakeholders from a variety of departments to ensure that shared laboratory spaces and equipment are maintained to maximize efficiency of the work performed and to minimize disruptive logistical or contamination related concerns. Serves as an advisor supporting the design of bioMérieux Molecular Biology laboratory facilities and workflow designs in the SLC 515 shared laboratory spaces. This position reports to the Senior Director of Molecular Biology, System Sustainment and SLC Shared Resources and is expected to have 3-5 direct reports. Job responsibilities are listed below.

Job Duties:

Manages the day to day activities, priorities, and workload of the Laboratory Support team.

Responsible for maintaining proper laboratory standards and procedures in the Salt Lake City Molecular Bioloby laboratories including the Main Lab, Biosafety Lab, Pre- and Post-PCR Labs, Sequencing Labs, and other related areas.

Collaborates with Facilities team to optimize major equipment location, functionality, and safety.

Collaborates with QA/Metrology to ensure compliance with approved R&D laboratory protocols and documents (SOPs); includes ensuring calibration and scheduled maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.

Collaborates with HSSE team regarding lab safety, safety plans, chemical safety, safety messaging, emergency response plans, and acces to regulated R&D shared laboratory spaces.

Collaborates with Sourcing and appropriate stakeholders to coordinate lab-related purchases; assist Director in managing capital budgets and expenditures.

Collaborates with Sourcing, vendors, and appropriate stakeholders for equipment service, and maintains equipment service contracts for R&D laboratory equipment.

Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders regarding the allocation and management of laboratory space and equipment.

Serves as the subject matter expert for laboratory-related questions and issues (including contamination control, laboratory workflow, laboratory moves, construction and renovations).

Coordinates new hire training and certification for general and regulated access areas; includes maintaining records of trainings.

Assists with the drafting, maintenance, and revisions of lab-related documentation (SOPs, ECRs, etc.).

Oversees and coordinates contamination prevention programs. Coordinates laboratory cleaning procedures and schedules. Coordinates contamination monitoring. Includes coordinating laboratory decontamination and waste removal in general and regulated areas.

Collaborates with Lab Support, outside vendors, bioMerieux’s Purchasing, and Materials Management to ensure availability of general supplies in the R&D laboratory. Includes determining stocking levels for standard laboratory supplies.

Manages 3 direct reports

Perform all work in compliance with company quality procedures and standards.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor Degree Required

4 years of experience with the demonstrated ability to lead others

Management experience preferred

Molecular Biology experience preferred

Experience with maintenance of laboratory equipment preferred

Technical writing experience preferred

Excellent organizational and project management skills
