Overview

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for an Institutional Data Analyst with the Division of Management Information (DMI). The Data Analyst provides comprehensive institutional data to support institutional decision-making, policy-making, strategic planning, and assessment. This position collects, analyzes, and reports data from the university's administrative databases. In addition, this position interacts with internal and external constituents and represents the office on university committees as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Gather information from university departments and extract data from DMI sources and other university administrative databases to create reports for responding to data requests.
  • Use appropriate applications and data to assist administrators, faculty, and staff in obtaining timely, accurate, and relevant information.
  • Assist in the interpretation of data and trends, summarization of results, and preparation of reports.
  • Assist users in the appropriate and secure use of data provided and/or maintained by DMI.
  • Verify data accuracy; initiate and resolve data quality issues; apply and ensure proper data access rules.
  • Working as part of a team with other DMI staff, design and build new interfaces and systems to meet changing information needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation on projects, processes, and reports.
  • Develop a thorough familiarity with university data sources and understand the appropriate use of each.
  • Maintain an understanding of reporting requirements.
  • Understand the legal and regulatory environment controlling the use and dissemination of university data, including highly confidential information.
  • Represent DMI on university committees as needed.

Qualifications

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year, Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18) months, 90 semester hours equals two (2) years, Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years.
  • Demonstrated experience writing SQL queries.
  • Demonstrated experience with programming languages (e.g., SAS, Python, or R).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience in higher education (e.g., data reporting, data analysis).
  • Experience using MS Office suite and Windows operating systems.
  • Experience querying student data from the University of Illinois data warehouse.
  • Experience querying employee data from the University of Illinois data warehouse.
  • Experience with SSIS.
  • Experience with Visual Studio IDE.
  • Experience with web application development.

  • Strong verbal, writing and problem-solving skills.
  • Attentive to detail, organized, and flexible in an environment of multiple projects and shifting deadlines.
  • Ability to complete projects independently and work as a part of a team on projects.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas to non-technical professionals.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records and documentation.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The budgeted salary for this position is $70,000-$85,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
