Position Overview
Under the direction of the CAAP Site Coordinator and per the goals and objectives of the Boys & Girls Club of Lower Bergen County, the Youth Development Professional (YDP) is responsible for assisting the Program Instructor in implementing after-school programs/activities. The YDP implements a wide-ranging program plan that helps nurture and harvest the potential of Club members. The individual will role model our core values of honesty, respect, and responsibility and work daily to develop personal and meaningful relationships with members, volunteers, program participants, and others.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Experience and/or knowledge in developing and implementing elementary school enrichment programs that nurture the potential of youth.
- Must be able to pass a background check. Consists of two NJDCF-required checks and two organizational checks.
- Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol test at the employer’s request and comply with a Drug-Free policy.
- Must be able to provide a valid (acceptable) identification for the completion of the employment eligibility verification information in accordance with the I-9.
- Flexible and able to adapt to changes in the work environment.
- Have access to reliable transportation to commute to and from work to program locations, and for activities (such as meetings, classes, and workshops in and out of the immediate area).
- An understanding of the Club’s mission and values.
- Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, and work effectively in stressful situations.
- Ability to understand and carry out varied instructions and procedures with minimal supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively and exhibit excellent relationship-building skills with all levels of employees, management, and students (families).
- Assists the Program Instructors with the implementation of the lesson plans.
- Attend all required staff meetings and training.
- Complete 12 hours of training annually.
Physical Demands
Standing, walking, running/jogging (occasionally during program), leaning, bending, sitting. Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities)
The essential functions or duties are provided for illustration only and may include other reasonable tasks as assigned for the good of the Club.
- Able to manage groups of students in an out-of-school time environment.
- Approach to work is one that is supportive, nurturing, and inclusive for all.
- Arrive daily for the scheduled workday on time and prepared for the work shift. Staff must notify leadership if they will be absent by 10 am of the day.
- Must clock in or complete a timesheet daily upon arrival and at the end of the work shift.
- Does not use personal electronic devices during a work shift (i.e., cell phone, earphones, etc.).
- Maintains a professional appearance and conducts business using a customer-centered approach.
- Participate in staff meetings, surveys, and questionnaires as needed by the program or organization.
- Assist senior staff as necessary to ensure successful outcomes of the Club’s operations and mission.
- Contribute to implementing and carrying out programs and activities daily.
- Contribute to creating a positive Club environment that facilitates the achievement of youth development outcomes (Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship, Healthy Lifestyles).
- Manage student conflict, problems, and emergencies, analyze situations, comprehend problems, and draw reliable conclusions taking appropriate action without waiting for direction.
- Acts as a role model by actions in both professional and personal life; provide members guidance and mentoring to help them make appropriate educational, personal, physical, social, emotional, and career choices.
- Contributes to ensuring a healthy and safe environment for members; ensures that facilities, equipment, and supplies are maintained.
- Maintain confidentiality of members, employees, and Club information.
- Oversee proper record keeping and reporting including daily attendance and incident reports.
- Reports any suspected abuse to the Program Director and Site Coordinator, to ensure proper steps in reporting and documentation.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Education / Certifications
Completion of 30 college credits; can be substituted with 2 years of relevant work experience. Must attain CPR/First Aid and Child Abuse certifications within 90 days of hire. (This course is offered by the Boys & Girls Club).
Base Hours
Fall – October through December: 6 sessions. Winter/Spring – February through March: 6 sessions. Monday through Thursday: 3:05pm – 4:30pm. Weekly schedule per school.
Work Locations
Hackensack Area elementary public schools in Hackensack, NJ; occasional offsite trips and activities may be required.
Professional Development
The majority of training will be provided during onboarding; additional training may be offered online or in person. Training may occur outside traditional work hours. Staff are expected to attend all scheduled training courses. Reasonable accommodations will be made for those who cannot attend training, with prior notification. Training-related expenses will be reimbursed with documentation of hours.
Working Conditions
Roles are based at one of the four Hackensack Elementary Public Schools with possible offsite activities. Regular communication with HPS staff, students, school staff, and occasionally with parents.
