Position
Mechanical Hardware Engineer (Data Center Focus) – High Speed IO Connector team, Etters, PA (Valley Green, PA)
Responsibilities
- Hardware engineer for High Speed I/O products. Responsible for concept generation, design, verification and qualification of hardware needed to implement High Speed IO products into customer systems.
- Ensure that the product design is manufacturable and will meet the defined customer requirements, including electrical, mechanical and environmental requirements.
- Provide close customer interaction and work as part of a global cross-functional team. Collaborate with internal and external suppliers and manufacturing personnel, supporting development and validation of prototypes through pilot production, and interfacing with beta-site customers.
- Conceptualize, design, and develop hardware to integrate IO connectors into customer systems, from initial proposal to successful tooling and product qualifications.
- Perform Design FMEA, tolerance analysis, Design for Manufacturability, FEA, and risk analysis.
- Define customer needs and functional performance requirements with Marketing and the customer; assess technical risk.
- Collaborate with internal and external (vendor) manufacturing disciplines (Stamping, Plating, Molding, Assembly) to optimize design for production processes.
- Lead product design reviews and verify accuracy of product drawings, ensuring proper use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Work with Materials Engineering to select metal and polymer materials based on performance, pricing, and global sourcing considerations.
- Engage with customers during hardware development, present concepts early in development, interpret feedback, and incorporate revised requirements into the design.
- Contribute to defining Product, Application, and Packaging specifications and verification/qualification test plans.
- Manage first article inspections and ensure smooth transition to manufacturing in collaboration with NPI and manufacturing engineering; mentor global colleagues as appropriate.
- Assist with interactions across global teams as needed during development and provide mentorship where appropriate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Proven experience in mechanical analysis (static & dynamic loading, torsion, compression, tension).
- Experience with risk assessment and mitigation in designs.
- CAD proficiency for design and concepting (SolidWorks preferred).
- Experience with static and dynamic load analysis using FEA tools (ANSYS preferred).
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles and statistical engineering methods.
- Understanding of mechanical and environmental testing (shock, vibration, drop, thermal, ESS, temperature/humidity cycling).
- Compliance with relevant standards (e.g., EIA-364-1000).
- Familiarity with test fixtures, environmental chambers, test equipment, and mechanical inspection tools.
- Ability to work effectively within a project team and to guide others as needed.
- Strong communication skills with global customers and all levels of the organization.
- Ability to prioritize work to meet objectives and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Familiarity with Data Center Infrastructure concepts and components.
- Plus: Substrate processing/integration; hyperscale data center experience; knowledge of high-speed interconnects; firmware/hardware co-design; data center architecture knowledge; server and switch assembly/validation.
- Experience with industry standards (e.g., Open Compute Project, EIA-310), cable management best practices, and rack/equipment design considerations.
- Leadership and mentorship capabilities; SpaceClaim (for mechanical interface) and Crystal Ball (statistical tool) knowledge is a plus.
