Overview

The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for a full-time Human Resources Generalist position in the Department of Human Resources.

This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Senior Director of Academic Initiatives and Human Resources. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description, plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Purpose

The HR Generalist is a key member of the Human Resources department, responsible for executing daily HR functions and serving as a primary point of contact for employees and supervisors. This individual will provide comprehensive support across various HR disciplines, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, and compliance. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and be committed to fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture that aligns with the University's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Recruitment & Staffing: Manage the full-cycle recruitment process for assigned positions, including posting jobs, sourcing candidates, screening applications, coordinating interviews, and communicating with hiring managers and applicants.
  • Onboarding & Orientation: Coordinate the new hire pre-employment process, including background checks and required paperwork. Prepare offer letters and facilitate new employee orientation sessions to ensure a smooth transition into the university community.
  • Employee Support & Customer Service: Act as a first point of contact for employee inquiries regarding HR policies, procedures, and benefits. Provide timely and accurate information and escalate complex issues to the appropriate team member.
  • HRIS & Data Management: Maintain accurate and confidential employee records in the HRIS (PayCom, Colleague). Process new hires, terminations, and other employment status changes in a timely manner.
  • Employee Relations: Assist with basic employee relations issues, providing guidance to both employees and managers in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Compliance: Help ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and support departmental reporting needs.
  • Benefits Administration: Assist with the administration of employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave policies. This role involves acting as a key point of contact for benefits questions and assisting with open enrollment periods. You will ensure that all benefits administration complies with federal and state regulations.

Qualifications

  • Experience as an HR Generalist or in a similar recruitment-focused role.
  • Hands-on experience with HRIS or payroll software.
  • Demonstrated experience in recruitment and onboarding.
  • Excellent understanding of employment law and HR best practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend, and follow directions.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Must have good teamwork skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation and excellent interpersonal skills.

Required Qualifications

Technology skills required for the daily function of the office and other assignments include Google Suite, Colleague, Formstack, and PayCom.

Education

BS in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or a relevant field.
