Summary
The Welder is responsible for executing high-quality welds in accordance with company and industry standards on a variety of metals used in ship construction and repair. This position requires a highly skilled individual with a strong mechanical aptitude, a working knowledge of welding standards and procedures, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints. Work is performed in a dynamic shipyard environment, often at heights or in confined spaces.
Responsibilities
- Perform welding operations using SMAW, Flux Core, TIG, and MIG processes
- Weld various metals including stainless steel, copper-nickel, HY80, and aluminum
- Interpret and work from blueprints and weld symbols
- Ensure welds meet quality and structural integrity standards; inspect for defects or flaws
- Maintain and operate welding equipment safely and efficiently
- Perform pre- and post-weld activities such as cutting, grinding, and smoothing welds
- Use power tools such as angle grinders, die grinders, and needle scalers
- Work in confined spaces and at heights following all safety protocols
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in work areas
- Assist with general shipyard duties as assigned
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform basic maintenance
- Adhere to project deadlines and ensure timely completion of tasks
Qualifications and Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum 7 years of welding experience in a shipyard or related industry
- Technical training or apprenticeship but not required
- Ability to obtain ABS certification within 60 days of employment
- OSHA 10 certification
- Familiarity with ABS codes and standards required; NAVSEA standards
- Proficient in welding techniques including SMAW, Flux Core, TIG, and MIG
- Ability to weld a variety of metals as specified above
- Strong understanding of job site safety and ability to complete company-specific safety
- Must be able to work any shift as required
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and attention to detail
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to follow instructions
Skills
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence, and memos
- Ability to write basic reports or documentation
- Ability to present information effectively to coworkers, supervisors, or clients
Mathematical Skills
- Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using U.S. standard units
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and talk or hear regularly
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 100 lbs occasionally and up to 20 lbs frequently
- Ability to work at various heights and in confined spaces
- Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with OSHA standards
- Must have manual dexterity and grip strength to operate tools and equipment
Work Environment
- Exposure to wet/humid conditions, mechanical parts, outdoor elements, extreme temperatures, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals
- Work performed in loud, high-paced environments, often in tight or elevated areas
- Must be comfortable working in confined spaces for extended periods
