Overview

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate automated side loader, knuckle boom and/or packer truck depending on route assigned. The successful candidate will function as the primary point of contact with citizens concerning solid waste, recycling and bulk/brush issues. Drivers service over 900 residential and/or business locations per day. Customer service is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Read maps and logically plan the most efficient route.
  • Articulate and tactfully explain city policy/code requirements to citizens.
  • Abate hydraulic spills and follow procedures if a chemical reaction occurs in the truck.
  • Record and report operation, maintenance and repairs needed to ensure equipment is operable.
  • Familiar with City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions; Federal and state safety laws and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL.
  • Know local and regional traffic patterns, road systems, and locations of landmarks and buildings.
  • Maintain safety and operational logs and checklists.
  • Inspect equipment to ensure it is safe and equipped for daily assignments (e.g., safety gear and supplies).
  • Train and instruct sanitation workers as needed.
  • Follow established safety procedures and prioritize safety to prevent injuries and property damage.
  • Supervise 1-2 sanitation workers as needed and ensure safe, courteous customer interactions.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: 2-3 years of CDL driving with city route experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licenses: Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement (Virginia).
  • Certifications: Ability to meet any required regulatory or safety certifications for solid waste operations.
  • Language: Ability to read maps and interpret safety and operating instructions; effective communication with citizens and coworkers.
  • Physical: Ability to perform duties with lifting up to 50 pounds and physically handle field tasks.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise 1-2 sanitation workers in accordance with organizational policies and laws. Responsible for safety and customer interactions of the sanitation workers.

Work Environment and Safety

Exposed to outside weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and varying noise levels. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable performance of essential functions. Safety rules and procedures must be followed at all times.
