Position title: Olathe Emergency Department Unit Secretary FT Nights

Position Location: Olathe Hospital

Summary

Under the direction of the Nurse, the Unit Secretary completes clerical and receptionist duties such as answering the phone, patient call lights, transcribing and entering orders into computers, calling consults and organizing the nursing unit in an efficient, safe, and neat manner. Other duties may include ordering and maintaining supplies for the unit. The Unit Assistant must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with tact and sensitivity. They must be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision while keeping appropriate others informed.

Practices within organizational/departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities And Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates ability to retrieve data using the appropriate computer system.
  • Performs non-clinical duties related to patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Assembles, maintains, and disassembles charts properly according to policy.
  • Communicates information to unit coordinator and/or nursing staff in a timely manner (e.g., physician calls, stat orders/labs, critical lab values, admissions, patient needs).
  • Demonstrates appropriate prioritization skills (e.g., stat/now orders, critical values, emergent patient needs).
  • Orders and maintains supplies and equipment as required on the unit.
  • As directed by a nurse, transports specimens to the lab and delivers blood/blood products from lab per procedures.
  • Assists with transport of patients to other departments or for discharge to home via ambulation or wheelchair.
  • Answers call lights and responds appropriately.
  • Utilizes electronic and web-based systems to assist with care transition and continuity.
  • Pre-registration of patient in Stroke Artificial Intelligence system.
  • Imminent death referral notifications.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.

Required Education And Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • Any job-related experience (clerical, administrative, secretarial)

Preferred Education And Experience

  • Previous healthcare experience
