Overview
Position: Unit Secretary/Patient Care Technician - NICU
Location: Arlington Heights, IL
Hours: Full time, 30 hours/week; 7:00am-3:30pm, every other weekend
Compensation: $18.84 - $27.32 hourly range. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.
What You Will Do
- Order special care equipment for the patient using unit protocol and hospital computer information systems; analyze documents to ensure department requirements are met before entering orders or sending documents to HIM for scanning; continually update electronic medical information vital for patient care; ensure unit-specific patient charges are entered into the information system when applicable.
- Triages physician and inter-department questions; resolve or refer to appropriate staff; provide customer service support using the AIDET approach; answer phones and may escort patients to treatment areas.
- Provide patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse; assist patients with ADLs; answer patient call lights; perform bed making and related tasks.
- Obtain vital signs and readings (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, intake and output checks, BG checks); report abnormalities; perform RN-directed procedures such as thermal applications, perineal care, removal of IVs and Foley catheters, Foley bag emptying, restraints, back rubs, etc.; collect specimens (urine, feces, sputum) and deliver as necessary.
- Document basic patient care, supply and equipment orders (e.g., specimen collections, basic labs, diet orders, EKGs) in the electronic medical record as directed per unit protocol.
- Transport medications that are not controlled substances and may access secured medication storage locations to perform job-related functions.
- Assist nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating and transporting patients as directed; confirm diagnostic or medical appointments.
- May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed.
- Provide administrative support including photocopying, electronic transmission of medical information to physicians, contacting physicians’ offices, pharmacy, and coordination with other departments to facilitate patient care and record keeping; monitor printers, fax machines, and tube stations and distribute information to team members as appropriate.
What You Will Need
- Education: High school diploma required or 5 years’ experience as a CNA/PCT with 3 years’ minimum experience in an acute care setting.
- Certification: Completion of an Accredited Certified Nursing Assistant course, EMT or paramedics training course, or current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation required.
- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
- Data entry or order entry experience on a computer preferred.
