Position

Position: Custodian

Responsibilities

  • Essential Functions: Sweeps, mops, washes, dusts and performs other cleaning duties; vacuums and shampoos carpets and stuffed furniture; empties waste containers and disposes of rubbish; replaces light bulbs, towels, soap and other supplies; operates floor and carpet cleaning/scrubbing equipment; repairs furniture; performs minor carpentry, mechanical and related tasks; makes minor repairs of plumbing and electrical fixtures and related equipment; checks that buildings are heated, cleaned, and secured for all activities; checks heating systems; maintains grounds including grass cutting, shrub trimming, raking leaves, snow shoveling; ensures buildings are secure and utilizes electronic security systems; assists in unloading, moving, handling and delivery of equipment, furniture and supplies; maintains building recycling program; paints rooms and equipment; maintains swimming pools; cleans and polishes buses.
  • Additional Duties: Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs; performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Completion of eighth grade plus one (1) year paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in building cleaning work.
  • This is a COMPETITIVE position under Monroe County Civil Service. To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet one of the criteria: currently possess the Monroe County Civil Service Title of Custodian; have held the title within the last four years; or appear on the current list of eligibles for the title of Custodian as provided to the district; or be hired as a provisional appointment with eligibility to follow.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Compensation/Pay Range: $18.45/hr. (negotiable based on experience)
  • Benefits: Qualifies for District contribution to Health/Vision and/or Dental Insurance
  • Paid Personal Time, Paid Sick Time, Paid Vacation Time
  • Schedule: Full-time or Part-time
  • 12-month / 10-month options: 10-month (student calendar) or 12-month options; 8 hours per day

Work Conditions

  • Travel: Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and central office, may be required.
  • Physical and Environmental Demands: Works in standard office and school building environments; able to work outdoors in inclement weather; exposure to cleaning chemicals and related hazards.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment; understanding of building surfaces and care; ability to operate floor cleaning and lawn maintenance equipment; ability to make minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry and mechanical systems; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to read MSDS/Safety Data Sheets; ability to perform tasks at a steady pace; good judgment; physical condition suitable for the position.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Works in school environments and outdoors as needed; exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and debris; ability to perform tasks in varying weather conditions.
