Purpose:
The purpose of the General Manager I (GM) position is to manage a QSR restaurant or a small cluster of restaurants or points-of-sale in close proximity, with sales generally up to $5M. The GM ensures the restaurant is clean, staffed, open for business, and operates to high operational and financial standards. The GM uses broad discretion and judgment to make leadership decisions and is responsible for the overall success of the restaurant.
Essential Functions:
- Open and Close: Ensures all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant to prepare for opening, holding Shift Managers accountable for executing all closing and opening checklist/requirements.
- Staffing/Deployment: Understands, adopts, and demonstrates defined manager behaviors to foster employee engagement. Deploys staff and resources to maximize profitability within the restaurant and accepts P&L responsibility. Assigns work tasks, prepares schedules, and ensures all shifts are covered. Provides staff with support, coaching, and encouragement to achieve business goals. Interviews candidates, makes hiring, termination, promotion decisions, and promotes HMSHost as an employer of choice. Ensures diversity and inclusion are actively implemented. Manages onboarding and offboarding activities, including compliance activities. Reads and understands financial and operational data to monitor progress and assigns staff accordingly. Recognizes staff contributions and supports recognition initiatives. Champions Employee Engagement behaviors and maintains current contact information for all associates.
- Product Availability/Working Equipment: Ensures daily orders are prepared, units are stocked, and teaches associates order procedures. Oversees receiving goods, processing invoices, and vendor contact for supply issues. Maintains proficiency in management systems like MIV, Crunch Time, Kronos. Monitors and maintains equipment, schedules repairs, participates in audits, minimizes waste, and participates in food donation programs.
- Brand Knowledge/Proficiency: Assesses staff skills, conducts training, embraces technology, maintains knowledge of brand standards, CBAs, lease agreements, and procedures. Develops strategies to increase revenue.
- Visual/Vibe/Appeal: Manages daily activities, resolves customer and staff issues, provides ongoing feedback, and implements marketing programs to drive revenue. Ensures the restaurant’s visual and service standards are maintained.
- Safety: Understands and enforces safety and health standards, trains managers and staff on wellness and COVID-19 protocols, and ensures compliance with all safety regulations.
Reporting relationship and other important information:
- The GMI position is an exempt role under the Fair Labor Standards Act, typically reporting to the Director of Operations or a similar leader.
- The position requires a varied, rotating schedule, including openings, busy dayparts, and closings to monitor operations during different times.
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:
- Must have at least 3 years of restaurant P&L management experience, with 5-7 years of overall restaurant experience in similar types of restaurants.
- Graduation from a Food Service Management or Culinary program may substitute for some experience.
- Demonstrates team management, delegation, issue resolution skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of HMSHost policies, products, and standards, or the ability to learn quickly.
- Ability to speak, read, and understand instructions, policies, and menus; communicate effectively with staff and customers.
