Material Handler Night Shift role at Drake-Williams Steel, Inc.

Location: Omaha, NE

Primary Purpose Of This Position

Fill customer orders and assemble shipments of fabricated bar, warehouse bar, and other materials for shipments to customers and suppliers. Receive and unload incoming material from suppliers. Locate material into inventory storage, staging areas, and work areas.

Compensation

$19- $25+ per hour

Essential Job Functions

  • Identify steel shapes, sizes, and mill tolerances.
  • Locate material as trained and instructed.
  • Locate bars or mesh according to the layout shown on yard map, cut lists and shop drawings.
  • Load/unload trailers, rail cars, customer vehicles, and machines.
  • Identify cut list and shop drawing errors and discrepancies before or during early stages of fabrication.
  • Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, jib cranes, conveyors, and transfers to move materials.
  • Any other duties assigned by management.
  • Attend all meetings as required by management.
  • Consistently and reliably work scheduled hours at assigned locations.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic computations involving whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with vendors, co-workers, supervisors and managers.
  • Ability to work under periodic supervision focused on progress and priorities.
  • Skill in using auto measurer, tape measure, or 1 rule.
  • Ability to pass a Drake-Williams Steel, Inc. administered test covering shop drawing interpretation and related concepts.
  • Ability to interpret, understand and utilize cutting lists, shop orders, and shop drawings.
  • Ability to use a computer for cut-lists and inventory purposes.
  • Ability to possess pride in workmanship, attention to detail, and safety mindset.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely, and to follow industry and company hand signals used for crane operations.
  • Perform minor mechanical tasks on machines (e.g., changing forklift tank, cleaning).
  • Ability to follow inventory procedures and multi-task.

Physical Demands

  • Stand frequently during an 8 to 12 hour shift.
  • Walk continuously during the shift.
  • Sit only during breaks.
  • Lift up to 30 pounds frequently; up to 60 pounds occasionally.
  • Carry weights over distances up to 300 feet.
  • Climb occasionally to frequently; kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl as needed.
  • Reach, push/pull, and handle overhead crane operations as required.
  • Upper-extremity movements and other repetitive actions applicable to job duties.

Non-Material Handling Demands

  • Work 40 hours a week with potential overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Hearing sufficient to be aware of safety issues.
  • Visual ability to read cut lists and shop drawings; safety glasses required in shop areas.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions; occasional exposure to fumes, odors, and dust.
  • Wear PPE including steel-toe shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.

Tools Required

Pencil, Tape Measure, Markers, Chainsaw, Cables, Pry-Bar, Ladders, Remote Control, Band Cutters, Wire Cutters, Bolt Cutters.

Machines Utilized

Overhead Crane, Jib Crane, Transfers, and Forklifts.

Experience And Education Required

  • Minimum of six months of experience in a steel manufacturing environment preferred.
