The Pennsylvania State University is hiring: Postdoctoral Scholar in Planet Comp
The Pennsylvania State University, State College, Centre County, United States
Overview
Postdoctoral Scholar Position is available starting January 1, 2025, in the Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University. The Postdoctoral Scholar will join a collaborative project between Penn State and Washington University in St. Louis to study how planet composition influences whether plate tectonics can develop. The project will involve studying how varying the relative proportions of primary mineral phases in the mantle and their strength contrast influences the ability of weak, localized shear zones to form, an essential component for the operation of plate tectonics.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will work primarily with Prof. Brad Foley at Penn State.
Responsibilities
- Theoretical and numerical model development.
- Implementation of grain size evolution theory into mantle convection models.
- Use numerical models of mantle convection to study conditions leading to mobile lid-style tectonics.
- Collaborate with experimentalists at Washington University to improve the grain size evolution theory and incorporate new effects from rock deformation experiments.
- Present results at scientific meetings.
- Prepare scientific publications.
- Mentor junior scientists (graduate students and undergraduate REU students) involved in the project.
Qualifications
The candidate should have a strong background in geodynamics or rock mechanics, advanced scientific computing and math skills. Prior experience with numerical modeling of mantle convection or ductile rock deformation is a plus. Research experience and communication skills suitable for working in interdisciplinary, multi-institutional teams are advantageous. Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or have completed all requirements by the time of appointment) in geophysics, geodynamics, or rock mechanics and demonstrate effective writing through high-quality reports and publications.
Additional Information
The successful candidate must be committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community and will be welcomed into an active community of planetary science and geodynamics researchers at Penn State. The Postdoctoral Scholar will have the opportunity to join interdisciplinary research centers such as the Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds or the Planetary Systems Science Center.
Application Instructions
To apply, please include in a single PDF document:
- CV
- Names and contact information for 2 professional references
- A cover letter (2-page max, 12-pt font) outlining 1) your research interests, 2) previous research, and 3) how your experience aligns with the position summary and requirements
This is a term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility for renewal.
The Pennsylvania State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. Applicants should provide evidence of commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and to engagement which creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.
