BookNook is seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. BookNook tutors conduct live, synchronous online tutoring sessions to help close the opportunity gap for K-8 students, focusing on Math.

Tutors must reside in the United States with a US mailing address.

Position Specifics

  • Subject: K-8th grade math
  • Curriculum: Lessons include inquiry-based instruction with a strong focus on explicit instruction. Curriculum and content provided within the platform
  • Position Type: 1099-eligible independent contractor
  • Timeline: Programming typically runs during the school year, with the busiest months from September–May
  • Pay Rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)
  • Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on availability and active programs; schedules may vary based on school requests
  • Sessions are held on weekdays only (no weekends) and can be before, during, or after school
  • Program duration varies; tutors are expected to commit to a full program with the same group of students

Responsibilities

  • Conduct virtual tutoring sessions in elementary Math using the BookNook platform
  • Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessions
  • Create a safe, respectful learning environment
  • Maintain positive relationships with students throughout the program schedule
  • Document observations for each session

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must reside in and work from the United States, and have a US mailing address
  • Note: BookNook is unable to engage with tutors who reside in the states of California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories
  • Classroom experience and/or online teaching/tutoring experience in K-8 math is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of mathematical best practices, especially for intervention and supporting students struggling with mathematics
  • Commitment to teaching in alignment with the provided curriculum, lesson design, structure, and strategies
  • Access to a computer (laptop/desktop), webcam, a distraction-free environment, and reliable high-speed internet (at least 20 Mbps)
  • Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create an encouraging and motivating environment

Path to Tutoring

  • Application: Submit an online application and receive a decision within 10 business days
  • One-Way Video Interview: Submit 3 short video responses describing background, interest, and ability to instruct virtually
  • Qualification Decision: BookNook reviews interview responses and notifies applicants within 5–10 business days of onboarding decision
  • New Tutor Onboarding: Setup payment account, complete a fingerprint-based FBI background check, and review online courses to become certified
