ATC Automation is seeking an experienced and innovative

Controls Design Engineer

to join our onsite team in

Simi Valley, CA . In this role, you will take full ownership of the controls software design and integration for a wide range of custom automation projects, from small-scale R&D prototypes to complex, high-throughput production systems. You will work closely with clients to define project specifications and collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver fully integrated, high-performance automation solutions. How You Will Make a Difference:

Design, develop, test, and commission custom automation control systems, including software for machine logic, motion control, robotics, data acquisition, and vision systems

Program and integrate various off-the-shelf automation components such as industrial robots, smart sensors, servo systems, and machine vision cameras

Translate customer requirements into functional control strategies and technical specifications

Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget while meeting performance and safety standards

Support the assembly, debug, and commissioning of equipment in-house and at customer facilities

Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless system integration

Coordinate with external vendors and subcontractors to specify, source, and integrate components

Design and implement user-friendly HMI interfaces and support integration with MES/ERP systems

Communicate directly with customers to refine requirements, demonstrate progress, and provide training

Travel to customer sites (~5%) for system installation, commissioning, and service support

Job Requirements:

Proven experience developing controls software for PLCs or industrial control platforms in custom automation environments

Proficiency in programming such as VB.NET, C, or similar

Basic proficiency with HMI/GUI development and PLC programming environments (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, Beckhoff)

Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols, including RS232, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, and CAN bus

Experience:

BS or higher degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, or related technical field

Hands-on experience in a controls design role within the custom automation or special machine building industry

Strong knowledge of:

Servo motor, stepper motor, and VFD system programming and tuning

Integration and troubleshooting of machine vision systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence)

Field devices (sensors, actuators), and signal processing for digital and analog I/O

Mechanical and electrical schematics for system-level troubleshooting and design validation

Selection of appropriate vision hardware (lens, lighting, filters, etc.) for application-specific needs

Physical Demands:

Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor level

Capable of exerting:

20–50 lbs of force occasionally

10–25 lbs of force frequently

Up to 10 lbs of force constantly

Visual Acuity: Ability to perform close detail work with or without corrective lenses

Hearing Ability: Able to identify mechanical or pneumatic issues by sound
