Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS)

ASAM Level 3.5 & 3.1 Residential Substance Use Disorder Programs
Position Summary
The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) provides recovery-oriented support services to individuals residing in the 3.5 and 3.1 residential substance abuse programs. Using personal lived experience and formal peer recovery training, the CPRS offers mentorship, advocacy, and guidance to promote recovery, encourage engagement in treatment, and support residents in building skills for long-term wellness and community reintegration.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Serve as a recovery mentor and role model by sharing lived experience appropriately to inspire hope and demonstrate the possibility of sustained recovery.
Support residents in developing and following individualized recovery plans in collaboration with clinical staff.
Facilitate and co-facilitate recovery groups, peer-led discussions, and wellness activities.
Assist residents with navigating systems of care, including treatment services, housing, medical/mental health, employment, and community resources.
Provide advocacy to ensure resident voices are included in treatment planning and program decision-making.
Model appropriate boundaries and recovery-oriented behavior within the residential environment.
Support transitions from 3.5 to 3.1 care, and from residential programs to outpatient or community-based services.
Encourage engagement in self-help programs (NA/AA, SMART Recovery, etc.) and pro-social activities.
Document peer support encounters in accordance with COMAR, CARF, and agency policies.
Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, and multidisciplinary care coordination.
Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards consistent with Maryland peer recovery certification requirements.
Qualifications
Current
Maryland Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS)
credential required.
Minimum 1 year of sustained personal recovery from substance use disorder.
High school diploma or GED required; some college or specialized training preferred.
Knowledge of ASAM 3.5 and 3.1 program structures, recovery principles, and harm reduction approaches.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and group facilitation skills.
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and maintain professional boundaries.
Familiarity with community resources, support groups, and recovery-oriented systems of care.
Computer literacy and ability to complete electronic documentation.
Work Environment
Residential program setting with potential exposure to high-stress situations.
Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays as program needs dictate.
Physical Requirements
Ability to walk throughout residential facilities, facilitate groups, and support residents in daily living activities.
Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
