The City of Alabaster, continually recognized as one of the safest cities in Alabama, is the largest city in Shelby County and home to one of the state’s elite school systems. Following the retirement of our standing Fire Chief, the Alabaster Fire Department is seeking a proven and visionary leader to guide the department into the future within a Mayor/Council form of government.
Position Overview
The City and the Department expect the new Chief to be an effective, energetic leader who embraces both the challenges and opportunities of a dynamic, forward-looking department. The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts. Talent development and workforce planning expertise to ensure readiness for the future. A decision-making style that values collaboration, innovation, and data-driven outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills to engage with the department, other city agencies, and the diverse community we serve. Commitment to using metrics and performance measures in evaluating problems and shaping solutions. The new Chief must be strategic, decisive, driving the department toward continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Strategic Leadership : Guiding vision and long-term direction of the department. Managerial Stewardship : Oversight of operations, staffing, and accountability. Community Relations : Building trust and partnerships with the public. Operational Readiness : Ensuring preparedness for all hazards. Financial Management : Effective budget planning and stewardship. Governmental Relations : Navigating interdepartmental and intergovernmental dynamics. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required (Fire Science or related field preferred)
Ten (10) years of management experience in fire service, fire safety, prevention, suppression methods, equipment, and supplies, or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be certified as a Firefighter and by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission and possess an active EMT-Paramedic license from the Alabama Department of Public Health. Demonstrated progressive supervisory/management experience with responsibilities in operations, HR, legal, discipline, hiring, and budget.
