Overview

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is looking for a Tax Auditor in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. This is a full-time, permanent position with a hybrid remote work schedule and State Benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, and retirement. This position will work out of either the Greenville or Wilmington Service Center. The minimum starting salary is $54,137. Responsibilities

The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, and some motor vehicle laws. The Tax Auditor I examines motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with Revenue laws of North Carolina, and conducts audits for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) purposes. Responsibilities include performing accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, and service stations registered with the Excise Tax Division to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules. Audits involve applying professional auditing and accounting principles to the examination of taxpayers\' records and tax reports. The Tax Auditor I maintains an audit plan, selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review. Audits may be conducted at the taxpayer\'s place of business; some overnight and out-of-state travel may be required. A vehicle and a valid driver\'s license are required due to travel requirements. Bachelor\'s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related fields considered include Accounting, Administrative Science, Business Administration, Business Law, Business Management, Economics, Finance, Public Administration, Tax, and related disciplines. A transcript (official or unofficial) must accompany the application to verify completion of the required twelve accounting hours. This position is subject to federal and state criminal background checks that may include fingerprinting and verification of tax compliance. Tax compliance is defined as having filed and paid all North Carolina state taxes owed each year or currently in a non-delinquent status with the State of North Carolina on taxes owed.
