Overview
Clinical Pharmacist role at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Staff member is responsible for supervising the filling and dispensing of medication orders, providing clinical services and drug information, and participating in training, quality improvement, and policy development within the pharmacy. Responsibilities/Essential Functions
Provide supervision of pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns who are responsible for filling and checking unit-dose medications, inventory control, and input of medication orders. Participate in daily patient rounds to provide input on pharmacotherapy, including pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic principles, toxicities, and dosing recommendations. Provide drug information to and consult with physicians and nurses regarding appropriate drug therapy. Participate in orientation, hiring and training of new personnel; engage in inter- and intradepartmental committees to coordinate activities among Pharmacy, Nursing, Unit Coordination and physician staff. Assist in investigational drug studies, including dispensing protocol design, drug record maintenance, dosage formulation, patient monitoring and ensuring compliance with FDA and DEA regulations. Prepare drug monographs and review drugs for admission to the Hospital Formulary; assist in reviewing drug costs and making adjustments as needed. Act as a preceptor to pharmacy students; conduct in-service education for medical staff, nurses, pharmacists, students and other personnel; assist in formulating and updating departmental policies and procedures. Assist with cleaning pharmacy delivery carts, medication bins, shelves, and other equipment as needed. Perform related duties as required. Reporting Requirements
Report any deviation of normal operations to the supervisor. Report unusual occurrences related to patients, staff, technology, or other operations to the supervisor. Report incidents and breaches in quality of care to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacy Operations Manager or Director of Pharmacy. Accountability
Accountable for appropriate drug therapy monitoring. Accountable for maintaining confidentiality and security of hospital-related data and information. Accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures, including Infection Control. Qualifications
Minimum Education and Training:
Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college of pharmacy with 2-5 years hospital pharmacy experience; PGY1 residency preferred. Minimum Experience:
Professional knowledge typically gained after a minimum of 2 years hospital pharmacy experience as a registered Pharmacist or after completing a PGY1 residency. Minimum Skills/Abilities:
Clear communication with patients, nurses and physicians; administrative skills to coordinate personnel and operations; teaching skills for preceptorship of students; analytic and critical thinking for assessing patients and planning drug therapy. Certification/Licensure:
Current registration as a Pharmacist in Massachusetts. Training:
Training in Aseptic Technique, TPN Compounding, and Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs preferred.
