The Perfusionist performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement and/or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system of the patient. The perfusionist operates and maintains cardiopulmonary bypass and ancillary equipment, supports knowledge and operation of perfusion equipment used in cardiac surgery and other circulatory support devices, and collaborates with the attending physician in extracorporeal perfusion practices. Primary working area is the operating room, with possibility of working in other areas of the Medical Center. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Provides excellent patient care by completing pre-op patient assessment, formulating a plan-of-care based on the individual patient’s condition and co-morbidities (including patient history, pre-op status, labs, cath reports, etc.). Understands surgeon preferences and adjusts the clinical plan accordingly. Prepares for cases by selecting necessary supplies and correctly assembling and preparing all perfusion equipment (including cardiopulmonary bypass system, cardioplegia delivery system, ultrafiltration, cell savers, etc.). Follows accepted standards of care and departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Demonstrates working knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, anatomy, physiology, physics, and the mechanics of CPB; comfortable using electronic medical records and electronic perfusion records. Recognizes and responds appropriately to critical situations related to support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system; communicates with the attending surgeon. Adjusts therapy as needed for changing conditions, including administration of medications and blood components. Ensures equipment is cleaned, maintained and repaired in compliance with regulatory standards and manufacturer guidelines. Maintains supplies at required par levels and ensures availability for procedures. Assumes responsibility for attaining, retaining, and renewing applicable certifications and continuing education as required by regulation and policy. Creates a positive team environment and supports a respectful workplace. Uses AIDET appropriately with patients and families. Performs other duties as assigned. Placement in the pay range is based on factors including relevant experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation such as shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Qualifications/Work Experience
Prior perfusion experience is required. ECMO experience is preferred. A working knowledge of cardioplegia delivery systems, cell saver, IABP, VAD, and ECMO is essential. Education/Licensure/Certification
Bachelor’s degree in a related science field. Graduate of an accredited training program accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Perfusion Education in cooperation with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Must be certified as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. BLS required.
