Cardiac Department Summary
Cardiopulmonary Perfusionist provides extracorporeal support to patients during heart surgery and management of the heart lung machine for patients at Monroe Carell Jr Children’s Hospital. The perfusionist is independently responsible for a wide range of mechanical life support systems. This position is based in cardiac surgery department but due to the nature of the work provides clinical service throughout the institution on neonatal, infant, pediatric and adolescents. The technical complexity of this position requires an understanding of cardiac, congenital pediatrics, pulmonary, vascular, and orthotopic transplantation procedures. Life support via CPB must be administered to a varied patient population safely and efficiently. The perfusionist conducts CPB independently, working closely with the surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nursing staff to tailor the perfusion to the needs of each patient. Key Responsibilities
Prepares for clinical procedures and safely, accurately and effectively operates perfusion equipment while monitoring patient physiology according to established VUMC perfusion policies, protocols, and procedures. Participates in the Vanderbilt Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology Program (CVPT) through clinical, didactic, and/or simulation instruction. Researches through academic collaborations, data collection and analysis and publication. Develops or enhances quality standards in cardiovascular perfusion that promote safety and protection of patients. Technical Capabilities
