Position: Medical Laboratory Scientist I (MLS I) – Molecular Lab Shift: Day Shift Role: The MLS I, as Testing Personnel defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Each individual performs only tests authorized by the Laboratory Director and aligned with their education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Under general supervision, after orientation, training, and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role, the MLS I carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the laboratory\'s standard operating procedures. The MLS I works independently and as part of a team to assure accurate results and records. The work requires professional knowledge to interpret test results used by providers in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Reports to: Manager and Clinical Supervisor. Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)
Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and reporting of test results. Performs qualitative and quantitative tests and procedures using instruments and/or manual methods according to laboratory policies and procedures. Operates all instruments/analyzers according to laboratory policies and procedures; performs routine maintenance, function checks or calibrations; recognizes instrument malfunctions and documents problems; performs troubleshooting and repair per guidelines. Performs quality control for all reagents and instruments; takes action for out-of-range QC results and documents corrective actions as applicable. Ensures accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results; identifies aberrant patient results and takes appropriate action; documents corrective actions. Participates in QA/QI activities and Proficiency Testing; handles and analyzes PT samples; documents errors using the hospital Safety Reporting System and informs supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered. Plans, organises, and prioritizes work to accomplish daily tasks; supports and assists coworkers to ensure high-quality patient care; able to work independently as well as in a team. Performs other duties as required, including inventory management, processing samples, calling back critical test results, and clerical duties. Qualifications
Education Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, or Laboratory Sciences required. Can experience be substituted for a degree? No. Licenses and Credentials Medical Technologist (ASCP) - ASCP-BOC preferred. Experience Laboratory experience 1-2 years required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Basic understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance, and analytic techniques. - Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. - Attention to detail and adherence to written protocols; ability to communicate with supervisors when issues are identified. - Team player with excellent interpersonal skills; professional interaction with physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
