Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (WBGC), a leading nonprofit serving Fairfield County, is seeking a Unit Executive Director to oversee our Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse in the West End of Bridgeport. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), this role is ideal for a strategic, hands-on leader ready to inspire teams, strengthen programs, and deepen community impact. As a Unit Executive Director, you’ll manage daily operations, lead high-quality youth programming, and foster a safe, inclusive environment where children and teens thrive. You’ll collaborate with staff, families, and partners to ensure the Clubhouse is a hub of opportunity, growth, and belonging. Clubhouse Leadership & Operations
– Oversee day-to-day operations of Clubhouse, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and standards. Lead and support staff in delivering impactful afterschool, summer camp, teen, sports, health and well-being programs. Ensure compliance with childcare licensing, health regulations, and BGCA safety standards. Maintain a welcoming, safe, and engaging environment for youth, families, and staff. Implement and evaluate comprehensive youth development programs that promote academic success, physical well-being through sports, teen engagement, workforce readiness, and leadership and character development; align program goals with mission and community needs, with measurable outcomes. Integrate trauma-informed practices, mentoring, and workforce readiness initiatives. Collaborate with the COO and programming teams to enhance curriculum and delivery. Staff Development & Culture
– Recruit, train, and supervise program directors and frontline staff. Foster a culture of equity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development. Community Engagement & Partnerships
– Build and maintain relationships with schools, local organizations, and families. Represent WBGC in the community and advocate for youth-focused initiatives. Support membership growth and engagement strategies through data-driven outreach, inclusive programming, and community partnerships. Foster a welcoming environment that encourages retention and aligns with organizational values and goals. Manage Clubhouse budget in collaboration with the COO and CFO. Ensure responsible expense management and resource allocation. Support fundraising and grant implementation at the site level. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, nonprofit management, or related field. 5+ years of management experience in urban education, youth development or nonprofit leadership. Extensive experience overseeing program operations with focus on afterschool programs, summer camps, teen engagement initiatives, and youth sports. Proven ability to lead diverse teams and build community relationships. Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonal. Proven ability to lead teams, develop curriculum, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster inclusive environments that promote positive youth development. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Bilingual skills are a plus. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Ability to lift light objects (
