Overview The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Equipment Operator, Senior (EOS). This position will provide litter clean-up and abatement services in the Broward Municipal Services District (BMSD) and support a new litter abatement program, including operating a new litter vacuum truck within the BMSD. The role requires the ability to drive large trucks and operate heavy equipment including a single-axle truck, tandem dump truck, roll-off truck, semi-trailer truck, box truck, and/or claw truck, and may operate other waste collection trucks as needed. Additional duties include manual litter collection as needed, completing daily work orders, logging locations serviced, and identifying hot spots for service, monitoring, and outreach. Responsibilities The Equipment Operator, Senior (EOS) operates large vehicles and performs related skilled work. This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Specific responsibilities include: Operate heavy equipment and large vehicles (including but not limited to single-axle trucks, tandem dump trucks, roll-off trucks, semi-trailers, box trucks, and claw trucks). Drive and operate a variety of waste collection and related equipment as assigned. Perform manual litter collection as needed and complete daily work orders. Log locations serviced and identify hot spots for service, monitoring, and outreach. Performs operator pre-checks on equipment; check lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems; make minor adjustments and report malfunctions to supervisor. Supervise labor crews with assigned tasks or act as sub-foreman on landscape or construction jobs. Perform related work as assigned. Scope of Work The following functions represent the majority of time spent in this class. Management may assign additional related functions as necessary: Transport construction equipment using lowbed semi-trailer; operate tractor-trailer and tandem trucks in local hauling tasks; load and unload vehicles as required. Operate heavy-duty road roller in resurfacing and roadway construction; operate front-end loader or small tractor with hydraulic loading lift and backhoe digging shovel; operate tractor with a brush hog for mowing shoulders and removing vegetation from drainage ditches. Operate sweeper truck for cleaning roadways; may operate smaller earth-moving equipment such as small bulldozers and Bobcats. Perform operator pre-checks on equipment; check lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems; make necessary minor adjustments and report malfunctions to supervisor. Supervise labor crew with assigned tasks or act as sub-foreman on landscape or construction jobs. Perform related work as assigned. Work Environment Physical Demands: Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting on a regular basis and involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force, or requires very close tolerances or speed in dexterity. Unavoidable Hazards: Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic and moving machinery. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment related to the area of assignment or closely related experience. Special Certifications and Licenses Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License B or higher for the duration of appointment. Preferences Associates or Vocational degree in heavy equipment operation or closely related field MOT Certification or Spotter Training One (1) year experience operating waste collection trucks One (1) year of experience with truck loading, transporting and maintenance, or closely related experience Two (2) years of experience utilizing dump trucks, roll-off trucks, semi-trailer trucks, box trucks, and/or claw trucks Special Information Competencies Decision Quality Makes good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.
