Job Description The Utah Department of Transportation is seeking an organized, self-motivated individual to fill the

Construction Transportation Technician III

position on their

Region Four Moab or Monticello Construction Crew . This crew is responsible for completing UDOT construction projects in San Juan and Grand counties.

Principal Duties As a transportation technician in a construction role, you will perform, lead, and guide others in inspecting work-related activities performed by contractors, test roadway materials, and use various software to administer construction projects. You will act on behalf of engineering staff in materials testing, project inspection, documentation, and office duties such as entering documentation into ProjectWise, project accounting, and pay estimates. You will use computer spreadsheets, project accounting, electronic field books, and Masterworks for project documentation. When needed, you will also operate heavy machinery from snowplows to backhoes to maintain the roads, inspect and test materials placed, and use software to manage the Department's assets. After 18 months, each Transportation Technician is expected to become cross-trained in areas of Construction and Maintenance, including but not limited to the following: Mentoring and training Transportation Technicians. Leading or functionally supervising staff; delegating work assignments, monitoring/reviewing the quality of work, scheduling staff, providing technical assistance or training, and providing input on performance appraisal, hiring, and discipline. Performing construction inspection and documentation on the work performed by contractors Performing materials testing and providing the required documentation to ensure features are constructed/installed according to project plans and specifications. Gathering, identifying, and storing samples of materials to be tested on-site or forwarded to a laboratory for testing. Working with contractors to complete construction, maintenance, and permit projects. Working alongside contractors to oversee the installation of roadways, drainage systems, and other infrastructure. Conducting traffic control and safety operations at construction sites. Maintaining accurate project records and reports using UDOT software systems. Ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations on job sites. Maintaining accurate records and logs. Detecting and eliminating/minimizing safety hazards. Ensuring projects have complete and proper documentation. Working with contractors. Assisting with Project Closeout. Assisting in snow removal operations as needed.

Removing snow from state roadways using snowplows/graders/blowers, etc. Performing general maintenance on equipment. Operate heavy equipment, including loaders, backhoes, graders, and dump trucks.

Completing other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications The qualified candidate will meet the following requirements:

Experience & Technical Qualifications

At least 2 years (24 months) of experience leading heavy highway construction projects in an inspection or supervisory role. Experience managing paving, structure, airport, commercial, or residential construction projects. Ability to read, interpret, and adhere to construction specifications. Proficient in construction inspection practices, including identifying inspection areas, documenting conditions, reporting contractor activity, and photographing materials and equipment placement. Certifications & Training

DTT Certification for field testing of in-place density (soils, soil-aggregate mixtures, aggregate products, and bituminous mixes). CTT Certification for field sampling and testing of Portland Cement Concrete. Completion of UDOT Construction Training Program Levels I, II, and III. Environmental Control Supervisor (ECS) certification or equivalent knowledge of 404 Permits, UPDES Permits, Stream Alteration Permits, and related environmental requirements. Ability and willingness to obtain additional region-required certifications within the first year and maintain certification currency. Willingness to complete continued education through the UDOT Transportation Education Program (TEP). Collaboration & Leadership

Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Holds a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within one year of hire through Department-provided training. Must participate in the Region's snow plan per UDOT Policy 06A-15. Available for 24-hour on-call response as needed. Will provide a smartphone with data and will be eligible for a monthly taxable allowance per UDOT Policy 02-26.

Underfill This position may be filled at the Transportation Technician II level for applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications and are not qualified as a Transportation Technical level III. To be eligible to fill this position as Transportation Technician II, you must have all the skills of Transportation Technician I and II, and have experience leading teams and training others. Applicants must have a class "A" CDL or be able to obtain one within one year after hire.

Preferences Preference may be given to applicants who have:

A Class "A" Commercial Driver's License. Transportation Education Program (TEP) Transportation Technician II Training or has at least 36 months of heavy highway construction experience leading a team and projects. Maintenance/construction experience. Professional work experience operating heavy equipment. Professional work experience with and/or knowledge of roadway maintenance/construction and snow removal.

Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all commercial driver license and learner permit holder's. Selected candidate will be required to register and authorize UDOT to conduct full pre-employment queries and limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment in order to be selected for this role. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. Standard 40 hours per week. Schedule subject to change and subject to 24-hour availability, overtime, and varied work schedules due to inclement weather conditions, job assignment, and emergencies. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time. Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working outdoors in inclement weather conditions, standing for long periods of time, etc. Employee may be reassigned to a different work location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
