ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) creates and coordinates services that enhance the quality of life for Cambridge residents. Driven by the needs of residents, DHSP's extensive services and programs touch almost every sector in the city: from newborns to senior citizens, from school-aged children to homeless families, from non-profit organizations to local employers.About The Community Learning Center:The Community Learning Center (CLC) empowers a diverse community of adult learners to transform their lives and realize their potential through education, skills development, and community participation. Students are predominantly low-income Cambridge residents; come from a variety of ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds; and are currently enrolled in English or Adult Basic Education classes or training.ABOUT THE ROLE:The CLC's Part-time ESOL teachers are responsible for teaching classes, writing lesson plans, developing instructional materials, providing ongoing assessment of students, reviewing goals and achievements with students, and maintaining records of student participation and progress. They may serve on a team, and they may serve as part-time representatives to staff and department meetings. We are looking for a committed individual who will flourish in these roles:ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Dynamically teach ESOL classes to adult learners, whether in person, hybrid, or onlineProvide scaffolded, explicit instruction, practice, and assessment in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to help students achieve college, career, and personal goalsWork as a team with other teachers and staff to develop materials, lessons, and share best practicesEngage in ongoing professional development to continually improve our servicesReasonable accommodations will be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:One year of experience teaching ESOLKnowledge of methods and materials used in ESOL instruction.Sensitivity to the needs of the adult learner populationBachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experienceA commitment to racial equity and a desire to understand and interrupt systemic racism and other forms of oppressionThe City of Cambridge's workforce, like the community it serves, is diverse. Applicants must have the ability to work and interact effectively with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologiesPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience teaching adults in a community-based settingExperience with remote instruction, digital literacy, and distance learningA passion for collaboration, problem-solving, and learning new thingsBEST Plus and/or TABE CLAS-E certificationBackground in special education or teaching reading.Availability to teach two evenings per week, from 6:15 to 9:15pmPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONSGeneral office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting; work to be performed onsite.Job requires computer use. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.Be comfortable to work primarily in a standard office environment with moderate noise level, telephones, personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.
