A day in the life…

Wondering what a day in the life of Director – IT Infrastructure & Operations at The Iowa Clinic might look like?

The Director of IT Operations and Infrastructure is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and management of the healthcare organization's IT infrastructure and operational systems. This role ensures the reliability, security, and scalability of all IT services, supporting clinical and administrative functions across the enterprise. The director will lead teams responsible for data centers, networks, cloud services, end-user computing, and IT service management, while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA and HITRUST.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and execute the IT infrastructure roadmap aligned with organizational goals and clinical priorities. Collaborate with leadership to support digital transformation and innovation in patient care delivery. Oversee daily IT operations, including network infrastructure, server management, cloud platforms, and service desk functions. Ensure high availability, performance, and disaster recovery readiness of all critical systems. Partner with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to implement and maintain cybersecurity best practices. Ensure compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and other healthcare-specific regulatory requirements. Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of IT professionals and managers. Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer service. Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and service level agreements (SLAs). Develop and manage the IT operations and infrastructure budget, ensuring cost-effective solutions. Oversee infrastructure-related projects, including EHR upgrades, cloud migrations, and facility expansions. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with clinical workflows. Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field required. Master’s degree or MBA preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

ITIL, PMP, CHCIO, or similar certifications are preferred

Work Experience:

10+ years of progressive IT experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Proven experience in healthcare IT operations and infrastructure management. Strong understanding of clinical systems (e.g., EHR/EMR), HL7, and healthcare interoperability standards.
