Summary Under close supervision, perform a full range of duties within the City's Animal Care and Adoption Center, including tasks involved in the care of impounded animals, cleaning and maintaining animal care facilities, feeding animals, and observing unusual animal behavior or appearance. Provide assistance to the general public in reclaiming impounded animals or adopting new animals. Safely operate City vehicles and perform related and peripheral duties as necessary or as required.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Clean and maintain animal care facilities and disinfect accordingly. This includes animal runs, cages, housing areas, feeding bowls, equipment, and tools used for the care of impounded animals. Open, close, and secure City Animal Shelter facilities. Report needed repairs of facilities or equipment to supervisory staff. Perform setup and cleanup for special events. Demonstrate responsibility for the care of impounded animals by providing food, water, and comfort. Closely observe and monitor animal behavior and appearance to identify sick or injured animals. Isolate sick, quarantined, or injured animals, closely monitor their condition, and notify the supervisor or other staff member if immediate veterinary care is needed. Exhibit the ability to handle animals in a humane and compassionate manner. Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports for all housed and/or impounded animals, including euthanasia, medical care, feeding, and monitoring. Comply with federal, state, county, and City ordinances regarding animal care and shelter. Provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and share general information about the Division's activities. Intake animals turned in by the public and complete the necessary documentation. Assist with public inquiries. Accept public complaints, either verbally or in writing, and forward them to the appropriate employee for resolution. Safely operate City vehicles and equipment. Minimum Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma OR GED equivalent AND one year of experience in the maintenance and support of animals in a veterinary office, animal shelter, or closely related animal care environment. License and Certification Requirements:
Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license upon hire and maintain it throughout the length of employment with the City of Victorville. KNOWLEDGE OF:
Facility and custodial maintenance and repair practices and methods. Occupational standards and safety practices. Modern cleaning and disinfecting practices. Various breeds of domestic animals. Safe and efficient methods of handling domestic and wild animals. SKILL IN:
Providing excellent customer service and communicating clearly and objectively, both verbally and in writing. Organizing work, prioritizing tasks, and exercising independent judgment, wisdom, common sense, and initiative. Following verbal and written instructions thoroughly. Using patience, tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealing with the public and employees. Demonstrating initiative, discretion, and judgment within established procedures, guidelines, and rules. Understanding and adhering to policies and procedures. Maintaining accurate written records. Managing time effectively. Paying attention to detail. Operating a personal computer and various software applications. Remaining calm while working under pressure. Recognizing normal and abnormal animal behavior. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with supervisors, employees, vendors, suppliers, contractors, external public agencies, schools, and the general public. Physical Demands & Working Environment Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. The incumbent may be exposed to dangerous or wild animals. Noiselevelsareusually moderateindoors andmoderatetoloudinanimalshelter facilitiesandoutdoor areas. Work is performed in a variety of environmental conditions, both indoors and outdoors. When working outdoors, the incumbent may encounter extreme weather conditions, including wet, hot, cold, wind, snow, ice, and heavy vehicle traffic. The use of cleaningchemicalsmayexposeemployeestofumes,dust,andaircontaminants. Physical demands require bending, stooping, and frequently lifting moderately heavy and heavy objects. The ability to stand, walk, stoop and bend for long periods is required, as well as lifting and carrying items weighing up to 100 pounds. The incumbent must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction and communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood. The incumbent will be required to respond to emergencies outside regular working hours and on weekends, and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts. Part-time employees do not receive benefits or merit increases and are hired at an hourly rate. Deferred Compensation 457 Plan:
Part-time employees are subject to a mandatory public retirement plan for the purposes of Section 3121(b)(7)(f) of the Internal Revenue Code. Before tax, contributions will be withheld at a rate of 7.5% of the Federal taxable gross. All contributions will be directed to the Guaranteed Fixed Fund. All money deferred and interest accrued is available after separation of employment from the City of Victorville, as defined in the Plan Document for the City of Victorville Deferred Compensation Plan in Human Resources. Sick Leave:
Effective January 1, 2024, Senate Bill (SB) No. 616 passed into law amending California's paid sick leave, which guarantees employees five (5) paid sick days per year, up from three (3) days previously. Part-time employees paid sick leave benefit will increase to 40 hours or five (5) paid sick days and will be available to use after 30 calendar days of employment. Sick Leave Payoff:
Non-represented part-time employees who maintain a minimum of 72 hours and have completed five years of part-time continuous service with the City of Victorville will be able to receive a payoff of their accrued sick leave hours.
