The Walt Disney Company creates innovative products and magical experiences for millions of people. Software Engineers build platforms, services, tools, and infrastructure for content and brands such as Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, and ABC. As a Lead Software Engineer for the Roku Client Application team, you’ll help build Direct-to-Consumer client apps (Disney+, Star+, ESPN, Hulu) on Roku streaming devices and smart TVs. Experience with BrightScript is preferred to craft best-in-class viewer experiences. What You Will Do
Be a critical member of a team building client app experiences in BrightScript using the Roku SceneGraph SDK. Develop new application features from on-boarding to browse UI/UX, analytics, and video playback UI/UX. Collaborate with Roku on hardware, firmware, and certification requirements from a client application perspective. Work with client SDK engineering, design engineering, services engineering, and product owners to understand requirements and device limitations. Contribute to tools and systems beyond Roku apps (e.g., JavaScript/React-based web tools, gulp build scripts, AWS configurations, Node.js services).
Responsibilities and Duties
Develop BrightScript client experiences and maintain code quality for Roku platforms. Contribute to on-screen features, UX, analytics, and video playback interfaces. Engage with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and constraints.
Basic Qualifications
At least 7 years of development experience with a client-side stack, including at least 2 years in BrightScript. Experience with MVVM architecture. Ability to design generalized solutions, reusable utilities, UI components, and shareable logic across applications. Strong communication, attention to detail, and self‑starter mindset. Experience mentoring junior team members.
Preferred Qualifications
Extensive experience creating pixel-perfect, performant user interfaces with animations. Experience with UI-level code, patterns, architectures, and data-driven UX. Familiarity with set-top boxes or Smart TVs. Experience with multiple devices and performance considerations; configuration-driven development. Performance optimization, feature degradation techniques, templated and custom controls, and asynchronous/concurrent code. Unit testing experience and familiarity with streaming technologies (HLS, DRM, HDCP, SSAI, SGAI). Experience with JavaScript (client and server), DevOps, gulp scripts, Jenkins, and AWS.
Education
BS Computer Science or related technical discipline or equivalent.
Compensation and Location
The hiring range for this position in Los Angeles, CA is $152,200 - $204,100, Seattle, WA / New York, NY is $159,500 to $213,900 per year, and San Francisco, CA is $166,800 to $223,600 per year. The base pay offered will reflect internal equity and may vary by geographic region, knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus and/or long‑term incentive units may be provided, in addition to medical, financial, and other benefits, depending on level and position.
