To manage and direct the functions and daily operations of the Research Translation department. Responsible for receiving and reviewing invention disclosures, management and licensing of all intellectual property, researching and preparing reports regarding the patenting process, and assisting management in developing optimal protection and commercialization strategies for all intellectual property created at UTRGV. Responsibilities
Plans, manages and directs the day-to-day operations of the Research Translation Office. Provides the intake, review, management, and licensing of intellectual property created at UTRGV. Oversees, evaluates, protects, markets, and licenses the University’s inventions and software. Works closely with industrial counterparts, faculty, and patent attorneys for development, licensing, and commercialization of new technologies created at UTRGV. Develops objectives and activities based on department goals. Develops short and long-range plans, conceptual designs, budget requirements and documentation for the assigned area. Provides outreach and informative forums to the university’s faculty on the commercialization processes. Develops process for invention assessment, patent and market analysis, patent filing and prosecution, and agreement negotiation, execution and maintenance. Assists with market studies for patenting and invention determinations and with the formation of startup companies. Promotes collaboration with industry, investors, and others within the technology commercialization ecosystem. Oversees technology transfer and commercialization activities for UTRGV, including patent applications, licensing, and startups arising from UTRGV researchers and scholars. Oversees the technology transfer process, patent law, licensing and royalties, and Regents’ Rules. Designs promotional and marketing materials in coordination with University Marketing and Communications. Reviews invention disclosures, conducts patentability and prior art searches, and analyzes market studies to identify potential licenses and licensees. Ensures regulatory and compliance guidelines are met for the Office of Research Translation. Develops and maintains relationships with internal/external departments and organizations. Oversees the case tracking software used within the Research Translation office. Performs regulatory research for disclosures including export control, environmental studies, and industry-specific regulations guidance. Reviews and implements changes to Regent’s Rules and other regulating agencies applicable to the University. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervision
Supervision Received: General direction from assigned supervisor. Supervision Given: Direct supervision of assigned staff. Education & Experience
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Management, Business Law, Business Administration, Computer Science or related field from an accredited university. Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Management, Business Law, Business Administration, Computer Science or related field from an accredited university. Licenses/Certifications: None. Required Experience: Five (5) years of related experience in intellectual property, patent examination, technical patentability and prior art searches or related. Preferred Experience: None. Skills & Capabilities
Equipment: Use of standard office equipment. Working Conditions: Office environment; some travel and weekend work required. Requires ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally. UTRGV is a distributed institution and may require presence at multiple locations in the Rio Grande Valley. Other: Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
