The Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU is the area’s largest single family room NICU. This forty-bed level IV NICU cares for all newborns born preterm or critically ill requiring surgical or medical management. The NICU cares for over 500 infants per year that are either born at VCU or transported in by our dedicated NICU Ground and Flight Transport Program. Recognized as the First Beacon Unit in the State of Virginia receiving the highest level of distinction, GOLD, this unit welcomes both new grads and experienced nurses.
Responsibilities
The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.
Qualifications
- Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A
- Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: N/A
- Experience REQUIRED: N/A
- Experience PREFERRED: Previous experience setting up and maintaining office system (organizational skills); Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology; Previous experience in a health care setting; Previous experience with Microsoft Office software; Previous experience with use of EMR
- Education/training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED
- Education/training PREFERRED: Completion of a Medical Terminology course
- Independent action(s) required: Able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision; Self directed in the accomplishment of routine activities; Issues involving VCUHS policy or procedure that involve sensitive or unusual situations should be brought to the Nurse Manager (or designee) promptly as warranted by immediacy of the issue.
- Job duties may include: Handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

- Additional position requirements: Unit Secretaries work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules established with the Nurse Manager. Schedules and hours may be adjusted to meet staffing requirements or unit needs.
