Position Summary

The LLSS Department invites applications for an Assistant Professor position to become part of the American Indian Education program. The candidate’s research and teaching experience will reflect preparation in American Indian Education or related field, as well as familiarity with Indigenous language revitalization, Indigenous pedagogy, and Indigenous research methodologies. The successful candidate will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. in American Indian Education, or related fields before Fall 2026. The successful candidate will have a reduced course load for two years, before assuming a full course load at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including core content courses (e.g., History of American Indian Education, Teaching the Native American Child, and Issues in American Indian Education), AIE curriculum area courses (e.g., Language and Education in SW Indigenous Communities, Education Across Cultures of the SW, and Science and Native American Education) and a preservice educator preparation course (i.e., Foundations of American Indian Education).

Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop courses at undergraduate and graduate levels within American Indian Education and related fields.
  • Engage in scholarly research and publish in areas related to American Indian Education and Indigenous methodologies.
  • Contribute to an active research program and seek external funding as appropriate.
  • Advise and mentor graduate students and support dissertation work as needed.
  • Engage with Indigenous communities and Nations in the Southwest through community‑engaged outreach and collaboration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate in American Indian Education or related fields by August 2026.
  • Scholarly evidence of expertise in American Indian Education or related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.
  • At least three years of teaching experience and/or related experiences in PreK-12 public schools, BIE, and/or tribal controlled schools.
  • Excellence or potential for excellence in scholarly research and publishing in American Indian Education, and/or related field.
  • Robust and current formal academic preparation/advanced study in American Indian Education.
  • Excellence or the potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in American Indian Education.
  • Ability or the potential to advise and direct graduate work.
  • Interest in and commitment to a community engaged approach to outreach and collaboration with communities and Indigenous Nations in the Southwest.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
