Job Summary: The Manufacturing Engineer will lead the transition of new products from Development into sustained Manufacturing and support products through their lifecycle. Apply engineering principles to analyze, develop and implement Engineering Change Orders and/or Deviations to document all changes to production processes, tools or parts in accordance with GMP and ISO quality requirements.
Responsibilities
- Develop new manufacturing technology to increase production capacity, enable future product technology introduction and decrease production costs, while maintaining high quality, environmental protection and safety standards.
- Identify improvement potentials for production processes (capacity analysis, lead time analysis) and cost of production (labor efficiency, material yield rate, other costs).
- Develop new technology in a structured approach based on business case analysis.
- Integrate best practices regarding safety and ergonomics in production workstations.
- Work on problems of moderate scope involving analysis of product, process, and/or data to identify relevant factors.
- Improve performance of installed manufacturing technology at the Chesterfield Site using continuous improvement, lean, six sigma or other methods.
- Improve Overall Equipment Efficiency of existing manufacturing equipment with a structured approach in collaboration with production.
- Optimize capacity of existing manufacturing equipment (increase theoretical output) and continuously track production capacity.
- Design, specify and/or purchase electrical, mechanical and/or software tools and fixtures for tasks in a safe, efficient, repeatable and cost-effective manner; perform tooling qualification.
- Seek cost reduction opportunities without compromising quality or on-time delivery.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts/technical teams to perform root cause analysis and develop solutions for process, vendor or design-related problems.
- Analyze the disposition of non-conforming parts and track problem parts with action plans.
- Estimate manufacturing costs and determine time standards.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to support development of new, manufacturable products.
Working Relationships
Coordinate project activities with Program Management, Quality, Contract Manufacturer, Purchasing, Service, Marketing, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, and global ZEISS teams. Promote knowledge transfer and coordination for implementation of improvement projects across ZEISS locations.
Financial Impact
Comprehensive analysis prior to decision-making is essential. Decisions regarding process improvements, tooling requirements and component disposition impact business operations and product introductions.
Working Environment
Manufacturing including instrument assembly, calibration and testing that complies with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Requirements
- BS degree in engineering or related field; or MS degree in engineering or related field.
- 3 years of equivalent experience in design or manufacturing engineering, or MS degree.
- Experience with medical device manufacturing and optics assembly desirable.
- Familiar with DFT, GMP, and ISO 9001.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Proficiency with Mentor Graphics a plus; proficiency with SolidWorks desirable.
Special Demands
