Overview

Sports Health Psychologist – Akron Children's Hospital is dedicated to building a diverse workforce and supports collaboration across divisions and with Akron University. The position serves student athletes at collegiate and high-school levels through collaborations between the Division of Psychology, Division of Sports Health, and Akron University. The role offers opportunities to work with an interdisciplinary team including sports psychology, psychiatry, orthopedic medicine, physical therapy, and athletic training. Clinical care will be provided for student athletes with pre-existing behavioral health conditions and new onset of behavioral health conditions as related to sports injury recovery and sports performance. Team-based care and collaboration with coaches and other sport leadership for mental health awareness and wellness promotion is encouraged. The position includes significant opportunities to develop and grow clinical services/programs in sports psychology.

There are robust opportunities for engagement in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research, with research support through protected time, collaboration with the Research Institute for research coordination and statistical support, and funding for travel to present at conferences. Research mentorship and peer collaboration opportunities are available.

Training and supervision opportunities are available to all psychologists, including a robust externship program with area universities, a Pediatric Psychology Internship Program, and a Pediatric Psychology Fellowship Program. Psychologists work with pediatric residents and fellows and with medical students through collaboration with Northeast Ohio Medical University. Educational and mentorship support is available for new supervisors and those looking to enhance educator skills.

Responsibilities (implied)

  • Provide clinical care for student athletes with behavioral health concerns related to sports injury recovery and performance.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and coaches to promote mental health awareness and wellness.
  • Contribute to development and growth of clinical services and programs in sports psychology.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and clinical research with available resources and mentorship.

Qualifications

Requirements: Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical psychology/sports psychology/counseling psychology including completion of an internship in an APA/CPA-accredited program, eligibility for licensure in Ohio, and completion of a formal fellowship/postdoctoral program are required. Experience with athletes at the elite and collegiate levels is preferred. CMPC certification preferred. Candidate must be credentialed by the AASP or meet APA Division 47 requirements. Board certification through the American Board of Professional Psychology must be obtained within 5 years of hire.
