Audi Field & Inova Performance Complex is hiring: Assistant Sports Field Manager

Overview

D.C. United is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Sports Field Manager to support the daily maintenance and long-term care of professional playing surfaces at Audi Field and the Inova Performance Complex. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that all fields are maintained to the highest professional standards, supporting MLS matches, training sessions, and special events.

Responsibilities

• Field Preparation & Maintenance
  • Assist in the daily maintenance of all playing surfaces, including mowing, fertilization, aeration, topdressing, verticutting, sod installation, and grow blanket management.
  • Perform painting of multiple field layouts for soccer, football, and other events with precision and efficiency.
  • Assist with pre-game and post-game field setup, breakdown, and cleanup to ensure readiness for all events.
  • Support both large- and small-scale renovation projects, including sod replacement and turf recovery programs.
• Equipment & Irrigation
  • Operate and maintain turf equipment including mowers, tractors, aerators, and utility vehicles.
  • Assist with basic irrigation troubleshooting, repairs, and system monitoring.
  • Ensure proper care, storage, and safe operation of all equipment.
• Staff Leadership & Collaboration
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising part-time gameday field crew staff.
  • Work closely with the Manager of Grounds to implement best practices in turfgrass management.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• Minimum 2 years of experience in golf course, sports turf, or related turf management field.
• Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management or related field strongly preferred.
• Strong working knowledge of turfgrass principles, cultural practices, and industry standards.
• Excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic with a willingness to learn.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Comfortable working in adverse weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, cold).
• Flexible schedule with availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by the event schedule.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced professional sports environment.
