It is the policy of the Bowie State University Police Force through the approval of the Director of Campus Police and the President of the University to establish a Security Guard program. It will be the SECURITY GUARD'S responsibility to support the Bowie State University Police Department by enhancing the safety and quality of campus life by providing a high quality security service to the Bowie State University Community. The duties and responsibilities listed below will enable you to perform your job in a professional, effective and efficient way.

Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision, performs routine security activities to protect buildings and property and safeguard occupants and visitors during normal operations and special events.
  • Report promptly to the shift supervisor all crimes, fires, vandalism, accidents, breaches of peace, and any other incidents that come to their attention during their tour of duty.
  • Be properly uniformed and equipped, giving careful attention to dispatches, orders, and instructions read or issued by the supervisor.
  • Safety issues and maintenance problems shall be recorded and logged.
  • Be accountable for the activities on the post to which they are assigned.
  • After conferring with their supervisors, report to the given assignment immediately upon coming on duty and patrol until completion of their tour of duty. When needed to leave their patrol area to answer a complaint, call for assistance, or other security matter, resume patrol or return to the assignment as soon as possible.
  • Be alert and energetic in assisting police and emergency response personnel during a fire, disaster, accident, or similar event as directed.
  • Sign in the PSA Daily Log book with time in and time out; read orders, notices, and directives posted in the Department and acquaint themselves with events since the last tour and upcoming events.
  • Become familiar with radio procedures, codes, and signals used by the BSUPD.
  • Familiarize themselves with the Bowie State University campus including streets, buildings, and other information relevant to duties.
  • Do not falsify location information in radio or logs; do not enter false locations or incorrect information regarding daily duties.
  • Call police for assistance regarding protection of persons and property on campus and in all cases requiring attention, even when off their assigned patrol area for urgent matters.
  • Carefully and diligently patrol every part of the assigned area as often as possible.
  • Exercise vigilance during hours of darkness or when buildings are closed; examine and secure open or broken doors and windows and report them.
  • Note the conduct of suspicious persons and report information to the PCO, shift supervisor, or OIC.
  • Enforce parking regulations and issue parking citations to illegally parked vehicles.
  • Familiarize themselves with the location of all telephone and emergency equipment on posts, including fire extinguishers, hydrants, standpipes and first aid equipment.
  • Will not congregate in Robinson Hall, on or off duty.
  • Seek and receive advice, counsel, and guidance from the shift supervisor as needed for proper performance of duties.
  • Provide escort services when needed.
  • Will not act in the capacity of a police officer at any time, nor shall they represent themselves as police officers at any time.
  • Will work special events.
  • To report to all identified training sessions.
  • Perform all other duties necessary that are consistent with the responsibilities of a Public Safety Aide or as directed by the Director of Bowie State University Police Department or their immediate supervisor.
