Overview

Position: Electrician II, III, and IV. Department: UO Building Systems Maintenance-1004. This role involves installing, altering, adding, maintaining, troubleshooting, and/or repairing electrical systems, lighting controls, access control systems, building security systems, fire alarm systems, and building automation controls. All levels test electrical systems and circuits, interpret schematics and blueprints, and ensure compliance with regulations. On-call rotation and occasional after-hours work are required.

Responsibilities by Level

  • Electrician II/III/IV: Install, alter, add, maintain, troubleshoot, and/or repair electrical systems, lighting controls, access control systems, building security systems, fire alarm systems, and building automation controls. Test electrical systems and continuities using testing devices. Interpret schematics and blueprints to install and troubleshoot conduit systems, wiring, and device terminations; ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Electrician III: Confirm scope, schedule, and budget requirements; coordinate changes; communicate with outside vendors and manufacturers related to electrical equipment and systems.
  • Electrician IV: Provide as-built documentation upon project completion; coordinate work and schedules with supervisors, staff, contractors, occupants, project managers, and engineers; train, mentor, and verify work of others; assist with project development, employee training, and safety coordination.

All levels may participate in on-call schedules and may be required to work after hours for urgent situations.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Electrician II, III, and IV: High school diploma or equivalent; able to lift 50 lbs; able to work from a ladder or aerial equipment; valid driver’s license and ability to meet University driver eligibility requirements; available for weekend and on-call rotations.
  • Electrician II: Minimum 4 years of experience with electrical and low voltage systems; ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions; strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills; basic understanding of building/construction principles, electrical codes, NFPA 70/72; ability to operate testing devices (ohmmeters, voltmeters, ammeters); must hold Nebraska State Journeyman Electrical License.
  • Electrician III: Minimum 4 years of experience with commercial electrical and low voltage systems; ability to manage complex technical information; strong documentation and multi-project management skills; solid understanding of applicable codes, NFPA 70/72.
  • Electrician IV: Minimum 1 year of experience in training, mentoring, or supervising others for installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems; intermediate computer skills; knowledge of card access, fire alarm systems, lighting control, and HVAC controls.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in electrical technology or related field; equivalent experience.
  • Electrician II: Proficient with Microsoft Office; completed UNL/BSM required training; experience with EMCS/CMMS, access controls, fire alarm systems; Nebraska Contractor Electrical License.
  • Electrician III: 6 years of experience with commercial electrical/low voltage systems; 1 year mentoring/training supervisory experience.
  • Electrician IV: 2 years mentoring/training supervisory experience; familiarity with installation, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems.

Pre-placement driving record review required. Physical requirements apply. CDL may be required; subject to DOT pre-employment and random testing for alcohol and controlled substances. Background checks required. Salary is commensurate with experience.
