Overview
Position Overview: The Library Media Design Specialist will lead the planning, design, and implementation of a modern, innovative library space that fosters literacy, collaboration, creativity, and access to information. Drawing on expertise in library media services, instructional technology, and learning environments, this role will ensure the library is both functional and future-focused—supporting diverse learners, staff, and community needs.
Responsibilities
Vision & Planning
Develop a vision for the library as a flexible, student-centered hub for learning, research, and collaboration.
Collaborate with school leaders, teachers, and students to gather input and align design with instructional goals.
Research and recommend current trends in library design, flexible learning environments, and instructional technology.
Design & Development
Partner with architects, facilities teams, and vendors to design functional and engaging library layouts.
Identify furniture, technology, and resources that promote collaboration, independent study, and digital literacy.
Ensure spaces are accessible, inclusive, and adaptable to future needs.
Library & Media Integration
Incorporate best practices in collection development, digital media access, and information literacy instruction.
Design spaces that support both print and digital resource integration.
Create zones for varied activities, including quiet reading, group projects, technology integration, and maker opportunities.
Project Management
Develop timelines, budgets, and resource plans for the library redesign project.
Oversee procurement and installation of furniture, technology, and resources.
Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to ensure timely project completion.
Professional Development & Support
Provide training for staff on effectively utilizing new library spaces and technology.
Develop user guides and resources to maximize student and teacher engagement.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Educational Media, or related field (preferred).
Proven experience in library/media services, instructional technology, or educational design.
Knowledge of current trends in school libraries, media integration, and flexible learning environments.
Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to balance traditional library services with modern, technology-rich practices.
