Gusto
Overview
Gusto is a modern, online people platform that helps small businesses take care of their teams. On top of full-service payroll, Gusto offers health insurance, 401(k)s, expert HR, and team management tools. Today, Gusto offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York serve more than 400,000 businesses nationwide. Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts at Gusto. We’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. About Design at Gusto
Product Design at Gusto is made up of over 80 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about empowering small businesses and their employees. We’re a cross-functional team focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops, and Front-end Development, collaborating with Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build, and ship experiences that matter. We value thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences. The Team
The Consumer Money team elevates the value of work and the impact of income for our users. We craft financial tools designed to empower individuals paid through our platform, providing greater control, confidence, and earnings from every paycheck. We support millions of users and drive product lines that enhance our customers’ financial lives. The Opportunity
As a Staff Product Designer on Consumer Money, you’ll shape the future of our business by designing new 0–1 financial products that help workers thrive financially. You’ll craft intuitive, high-quality experiences, balancing rapid experimentation with thoughtful design. You’ll build brand-new experiences and guide the work of external partners, often charting new paths where none exist. You’ll work with cross-functional partners across Product, Engineering, and BizDev to influence strategy, drive alignment, and deliver exceptional outcomes in ambiguous, fast-moving spaces. We’re looking for a strategic, entrepreneurial designer who thrives in ambiguity and loves tackling complex problems to create meaningful new experiences. This role reports to the Head of Design for New Revenue Streams. Day-to-day Responsibilities
Partner with cross-functional partners to define a long-term UX vision and ladder it into Gusto’s broader strategy. Shape product strategy, roadmap, team OKRs, and project priorities through a design lens. Deepen our understanding of customer needs through research, data, and hands-on discovery. Design and ship both new and iterative experiences that deliver value and raise the craft bar. Facilitate relationships with external partners and guide their design teams. Contribute to Gusto’s design community by sharing skills, perspective, and mentorship. Champion our design system and platform standards, evolving them through product work. What We’re Looking For
8+ years of Product Design experience, with a track record of leading design direction across teams and product areas. Experience designing simple, intuitive solutions in complex or technical domains—ideally fintech, platforms, or services. Partner closely with PM and Eng to shape roadmaps and system-level decisions, ensuring strong outcomes. High bar for craft; hands-on approach to ensure thoughtful, high-impact solutions reach customers. Ability to design cohesive customer journeys spanning digital products and human support touchpoints. Thrive in ambiguity, lead through action, and be motivated by real customer impact. Strong opinions held loosely; engage in constructive debate and help teams align quickly. Care deeply about Gusto’s mission and empowering small businesses through world-class financial tools. Compensation & Office
Our cash compensation range for this role is $146,000/yr to $183,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $177,000/yr to $222,000/yr in San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2–3 days per week (or more depending on role). Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. Equal Opportunity & Privacy
Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other legally protected characteristics.
